- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 September 2005I must admit I've been a fan of the Shannara series since I read the Sword aged about 13. Now a little older than 13 I still enjoy the series - while many people say (with some justification) that it lacks substance it's a great way to escape into a mystical faerie world that I almost feel I know my way around now.
This book, the third in the trilogy, follows Pen Ohmsford as he attempts to free his aunt Grianne from the Forbidding and return her to her place as High Druid. The book starts where the previous volume, Tanequil, left off and sees Pen facing the rebel Druids before he has even left the island where the Tanequil lives.
As if entering the Forbidding and bringing back his aunt from wherever she has ended up wasn't enough, the only way to get into the Forbidding in the first place is to enter Paranor. Then, just for good measure, he and his rag-tag band of helpers have to stop the one Demon freed into their world from destroying the legendary Ellcrys and releasing its brethren.
Finally at the very end is an interesting twist which doesn't change the storyline but makes Pen very happy. I thought the book was a great ending to the trilogy.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 August 2014Terry gets a lot of flak (as you can see in his other reviews), but this trilogy is actually very good. Having read all his books in succession up to the latest release over the past few months, it's easier to see the arc he's created, however in isolation I can see it can be a little frustrating. The plot-lines can be samey (as anyone familiar to his other work can attest to) but then with Terry you know what to expect and I genuinely enjoy his work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Génial

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating world of Shannara
Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseShannara books are the most fascinating cycle of fantasy books I have ever read. I enjoy great action and the wonderful world of Shannara created by Terry Brooks. Straken is the last book of the High Druid of Shannara series and closing book for the whole Shannara cycle. I am very unhappy that this is end of this wonderful story.
In Terry's books I admire his rich language. As a non English speaker I have learned a lot while reading his Books. Thanks Terry.
One thing that I do not like in Terry's books are maps. Unfortunately, none of them is good. Each of these maps shows a general view of Shannara world and unfortunately many details are missing. I am quite surprised that all rivers end up in lakes or disappear somewhere in the middle of something. I guess, it would be wonderful to have a large Shannara map (poster size) that we can hang on the wall while reading Terry's books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Spannung pur, aber ein fast schon übertriebenes "Hollywood Happy End"

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect!
Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseI purchased this book to replace the much smaller one I have which just doesn't look right among my others in this series. The book was listed as "Very Good" condition. It's more like "EXCELLENT", "Like New"! I am so tickled pink with my purchase! I would most definitely do business with these people again!! Very happy customer!
