- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 April 20134 stars as this book develops the characters well from the first book with a slightly unusual story for a fantasy book. The reason it did not receive 5 stars was the reliance the book has on both the first book for setting the tale and the third for not having a satisfying end.
Easy to read, strong characters with the main character showing selfish shortcomings and dubious morals.
As with the first book some fantasy readers may be disappointed with the book as the lead characters are neither blessed with magic or super human abilities of any sort, although the main character is blessed with great business sense (no sucker is given an even break).
Still want to read more from this author such are the strength of character development and the general quality if writing.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 April 2025I love these books. I’ve gone right back to the beginning started on the first one. I’m going to try and read all of them. I read one of the trilogies out of sync. It’s written in a style that keeps you wanting to read. It can get a bit long winded in places But you still wanna read on because of the characters are so good and interesting and you really wanna know what happened next
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 December 2024Of you have ever read any of F E Feist. Then this is a treat. I have read his books over and over agin. Pure joy
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 September 2013A complete change of scene, mixed with dark evil. The balance of this part of the saga is wonderful. The world of krondor commerce is brought to life impeccably and the mystery of the pantathians is developed further. A superb read which has more than enough highs to keep you going. I couldn't put it down.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 April 2024Another very long, winding tale that benefits from a large level of perseverance! At least the many characters became a little clearer.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 June 2013Raymond E Feist has kept me enthralled... again. I've been reading his books for the past 10 months and will happily read them for months to come. This, although not as magical as The Riftwar Saga, was another character building story which gave depth to Erik, Roo and Calis. I loved it!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 May 2015I loved this series of books. Feisty has always been my favourite writer. Now I have the pleasure of introducing my son to him. As always these saga's keep ones attention till the end. And always wanting more.

5.0 out of 5 stars A parte i 4 giorni di ritardo tutto perfetto!
Ottimo prezzo e buona qualità, il libro è praticamente nuovo! C'è stato un ritardo di 4 giorni nell'arrivo, ma forse è colpa della Pasqua!

3.0 out of 5 stars The main character makes this one difficult
With any story you are supposed to cheer for the protagonists, and jeer the antagonists. We want to see the plucky adventurer overcome adversity, the detective solve the crime, or have that HEA.
In Rise of a Merchant Prince, I don't have any of that. This is the third or fourth time I have read it, and each time I come away with the same opinion. Raymond E. Feist has written a very good story, about a character I cannot cheer for.
The main character is very problematic, a generally difficult to like. In Shadow of a Dark Queen, this wasn't as much of an issue, because Erik was the main character of that story. But in Rise of a Merchant Prince, Roo is the focus, so his character flaws become much more exposed. Especially in his interactions with Karli.
Despite this, Rise of a Merchant Prince is well worth the read. It is written to the high standards I have come to expect of a Raymond E. Feist novel, and the series as a whole is superb. I really wish I could give it 4 stars, but for the reasons stated above, it gets 3. (Because 3.5 isn't an option.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Feist's best series
The Robert Feist trilogy "The Serpent Wars" rise heads above his newer works and is a classic in the field of Fantasy/Sci Fi. His story is compelling, his charactor's so believable and likeable you won't be able to put these down until you reach the end. He ties many of his older charaters into the books and his central hero's/protagonists will have you staying up till dawn to find out if Roo, Eric, Pub and Miranda survive the travails they must endure to not only save themselves, but the magic and entrancing world of Midkemia. Even the supporting characters are well filled, interesting, and intriguing .
If you have not read any of his other books, you can still pick this up and not feel lost, on the contrary, the moment you finish, you will go back and order his other works to find out more about the character's pasts, the lives of other characters (such as Lord James, Calis, Kitty, and Macros the Black) and once you do you will not rest until you have finished all his current works and then like me, check every day to see if he has published another tale of the mysterious world of Midkemia, to find out why it is the key to all of the inhabited universe and the center of the battle between good and evil.
