A gripping fantasy packed with wizardry, swordfights, battle, romance and politics - Chronicles of Amber is a fantasy masterpiece

Amber is the one real world, casting infinite reflections of itself - Shadow worlds, that can be manipulated by those of royal Amberite blood. But the royal family is torn apart by jealousies and suspicion; the disappearance of the Patriach Oberon has intensified the internal conflict by leaving the throne apparently up for grabs.

In a hospital on the Shadow Earth, a young man is recovering from a freak car accident; amnesia has robbed him of all his memory, even the fact that he is Corwin, Crown Prince of Amber, rightful heir to the throne - and he is in deadly peril ...

The five books, Nine Princes in Amber, The Guns of Avalon, Sign of the Unicorn, The Hand of Oberon and The Courts of Chaos, together make up The Chronicles of Amber, Roger Zelazny's finest work of fantasy and an undisputed classic of the genre.

The Amber universe is probably Zelazny's best known work and The Chronicles Of Amber collects the first five stories in the cycle. Zelazny's prose is beautiful and intricate yet still accessible to most. He combines politics with fantasy very effectively, producing a book that is centered on a very diverse cast of characters, each with their own motivations. While originally published as five separate novels, they belong together, with each book picking up right where the previous left off. Whether you're a fan of fantasy or not, the world of Amber is definitely worth exploring.

In closing though, a few remarks on the book itself, not the story. As mentioned above, this book collects the first five volumes of the story. Zelazny wrote another cycle of five which deals with events that occur after the story in this book concludes. Currently, the only way to read this second cycle however, is to buy the Great Book of Amber, which collects both the first (Corwin) and second (Merlin) cycle. Unaware of this, and hesitant to buy a book that's over 1200 pages long, I went with this book instead. Of course, now I'll end up owning the first cycle twice. Finally, this books is rife with typos in its spelling, grammar and punctuation. You're likely to find at least one typo after every few pages.

So, to conclude my review, I can wholeheartedly recommend this story, but suggest that you buy the The Great Book of Amber: The Complete Amber Chronicles, 1-10 (Chronicles of Amber) instead, as the typos alone make this version quite a dissapointment.

Book itself is in fine condition; however, it arrived without the dust cover. Bit disappointed by that.

Good fantasy stories, however this Gollancz 2008 edition is marred by numerous typographical errors. Read the book, just not this edition.

Whether you like the writing of Zelazny or not... or whether you are new to his writings... I would urge you not to get this particular version. The book is filled with horrendous typographical errors which quickly become more than a nuisance... in places words are simply wrong and it makes reading some sentences impossible.
I am not exaggerating when I say there are at least 2 typos on every single one of the 800 odd pages... if this was a PhD thesis some one would be spending another month doing corrections

First impressions, presentation is good - I like the Fantasy Masterworks cover which is unusual and looks much more contemporary than most fantasy novels. Unfortunately my enthusiasm does not stretch to the contents.

Whilst Zelazny's imagination is evident, sadly I found the writing was terrible, to the point where I gave up reading about a third of the way through. Dialogue was trite, annoying and very Americanised. If you can get past that and are determined to read it anyways, then do yourself a favour and buy a different edition; there are spelling and punctuation errors all over the place in this one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the volume I was looking for

I blame this more om myself than the seller, although the pic did show the wrong volume, I was looking for volume 1 and mistakenly got volume 2, but I eventually bought "The Great Book of Amber" with all 10 volumes in the series, I am hoping to sell this book so that I can at least recoup some of the money I spent on it. At any rate will gladly do business with this seller again, and the price I paid for this volume was great.
