About the author

Robert Heinlein was an American novelist and the grand master of science fiction in the twentieth century. Often called 'the dean of science fiction writers', he is one of the most popular, influential and controversial authors of 'hard science fiction'.
Over the course of his long career he won numerous awards and wrote 32 novels, 59 short stories and 16 collections, many of which have cemented their place in history as science fiction classics, including STARSHIP TROOPERS, THE MOON IS A HARSH MISTRESS and the beloved STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 February 2016First read this thirty five years ago and I still love it. Very readable. A lot of the credit should go to the original editor of the magazine they first appeared in; John Campbell. He recognised Heinlein's ability immediately and RAH always benefited from tight editing. Each story is a mini masterpiece with a lot of Heart. The dialogue is spare and to the point. Compare this to anything after "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" and you will be amazed how superior it is (though poor Heinlen is still better than 90% of SF out there).
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 August 2015Excellent collection of all the future history stories
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 January 2018After years of having only part 1, to have the whole collection, including the novellas, is excellent.
Some of the stories are showing the ravages of time, but, considering when Heinlein wrote this stuff, they are still excellent reading.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 August 2016I bought this as I was a great fan of Heinlein as a teenager (about 50 years ago). I didn't expect it not to have dated a bit but was surprised just how poor the writing was and how ridiculous the science was.
Lesson learned. Never try to revisit your early life heroes.

This is a brilliant omnibus, it chronicles the entire "Future History" written by Heinlein. The Future History was written over many years in the form of independent short sorties and novellas with interlinked threads, plot and character cross-references. What makes this book a treasure is that some short stories and novellas that form a part of the Future History are now no longer in publication and those that are, if bought individually, are prohibitively expensive. Also I wouldn't want to start a series when I know that some of the books are no longer in publication, this is where SF Gateway has done a brilliant job of making these lesser know gems available.
All in all this is a great book, SF fans will obviously appreciate this more than the regular Joe/Jane, those familiar will Heinlein will appreciate it even more so.

Robert Heinlein in the golden age of science fiction. I hope every young man reads this heroic engineering romance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hey it's HEINLEIN!
I had my second paperback of this thick book and they have long lived outlived their use so I got a hardbound copy...and read it again. It is almost in chronological order, and is required reading for sci fi buffs.
I mean, really, what can you say? Some of these stories are just plain brilliant. Just mention the Laz Long name and that;s all you need. "The Roads Must Roll", a machine that tells when you will pass...and THAT little story from the beginning continues to roll through other stories. This is a must compilation, of great importance like "I, Robot". You cannot be a sci fi fab without this. You Grok yet?

5.0 out of 5 stars beware - written decades ago
These stories are of their time and should be considered in that light.
