In a single volume, the complete short fiction of one of the greatest SF writers of the century

Author of 2001: A Space Odyssey, Childhood's End, The City and the Stars, and the Hugo and Nebula Award-winning Rendezvous with Rama, Arthur C. Clarke is the most celebrated science fiction author alive. He is--with H. G. Wells, Isaac Asimov, and Robert A. Heinlein--one of the writers who define science fiction in our time.

Now Clarke has cooperated in the preparation of a massive, definitive edition of his collected shorter works. From early work like "Rescue Party" and "The Lion of Comarre," through classics like "The Star," "Earthlight," "The Nine Billion Names of God," and "The Sentinel" (kernel of the later novel, and movie, 2001: A Space Odyssey), all the way to later work like "A Meeting with Medusa" and "The Hammer of God," this immense volume encapsulates one of the great SF careers of all time.

Review

"This may be the single-author collection of the decade, even though the decade has barely begun . . . If the term 'sense of wonder' didn't exist, it would now have to be invented to describe what Clarke's majestic narratives evoke." --Booklist (Starred Review)

"With his awesome inventiveness, sure grasp of scientific principle, readability, openness, and utter lack of viciousness or meanness, it's easy to understand why Clarke became the single most famous and influential non-American SF writer of the post-WWII period. If you are unacquainted with Clarke--possible, though barely--begin here at once. If you're old friends: Browse. Enjoy. Wonder." --Kirkus Reviews

"Arthur C. Clarke is one of the truly prophetic figures of the space age . . . the colossus of science fiction." --The New Yorker

"He is the prophet of the space age." --Times of London

"Nobody has done more in the way of enlightened prediction than Arthur C. Clarke." --Isaac Asimov

"Arthur C. Clarke is one of the true geniuses of our time." --Ray Bradbury

"One of the most astounding imaginations ever encountered in print." --The New York Times

I read the Odessy series by Arthur C Clarke when I was in high school, and he was instantly my favourite author. After reading many of his novels, and a few short stories, I thought I would just go ahead and get the full collection. I am only about 20% of the way through right now and I will add edits later when I am finished, but already, its one of my favourite books.

All the stories take you on a small journey based off of one core idea that you figure out as the story progresses. That is one of the best aspects of these stories - you get your "pay off" pretty soon. However, the characters you encounter are well fleshed out, even though there is not much development simply because of the stories being short. But still, ACC somehow manages to convey the core characters and that makes you invested in them, and thus the pay offs of the stories are genuine. And of course, the sci-fi ideas themselves are classic Clarke. If you like classic sci-fi, the you'll love these stories. They imbue in you the sense of wonder that Clarke is so good at conveying, even in the occasional dystpoic stories.

My favourite stories until now are "Retreat from Earth", "Hide and Seek" and "Rescue Party". Its a perfect book to take with you while travelling, or read on your way to work or simply before going to bed at night.

All Clarke's shorter works, in one place! This includes the sublime ,"Meeting with Medusa", about the best novella/novelett ever written by anyone. The rest of the titles are shorts dating back to the 1930s, but don't let this put you off, you'll need to hunt far and wide to find better real science in science fiction. Notions still in use in Sci-Fi today first started life in these stories, as you will see ("the lion of comarre"...no spoilers if you havent read it, but 75 years after it was written is has huge impact today). Not perhaps the most literature-gifted writer, Clarke's writing is plain and simple, but he's a realist rather than a pompous optimist.

It's the collected short story works of Arthur C. Clarke, the big man himself. The mind behind 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Sentinel and Rendezvous With Rama. One of the Big Three of 20th Century science fiction. He needs no more introduction than that. This almost-1000 page behemoth of over 100 stories is not so much a book as an investment.

His writing remains absolutely world-class after all these years and hasn't aged a day. Some stories are stronger than others, but if you don't like the one you're currently reading, you can skip on to the next. I'll admit a personal bias because Clarke's short stories were my obsession throughout my teenage years (along with cheap black eyeliner and the boy who sat beside me in History) but even now as an adult I remember the giddiness of staying up all night to read ONE MORE STORY, not giving a damn that I had school in the morning. When this book dropped through my letterbox, my life screeched to a halt as I became 15 again, still amazed by his stories nearly ten years later.

If you love sci-fi, you need this in your life. Hell, if you love books, you need this in your life. And then set aside a few weeks to delve into the rest of Clarke's bibliography. It's worth the journey.

Many of the early stories are from before anyone had been into space, never mind set foot on the moon or anywhere else. He got some things wrong, but many things right. He imagined the future before it happened and this is an essential read.

By modern standards this is not an easy read. There is wheat amongst the chaff, but there is certainly some chaff.
As someone who grew up with the "big three"of SF's work back in the 70's it didn't really live up to the memory. Some of the stories are quite good, and it's worth the read as there are some not accessible anywhere else.

Well worth the money and contains some stories that will probably stay in my mind for a very long time. Some of my favourites are: Retreat from Earth (1938) The Forgotten Enemy (1949) Time's Arrow (1950) & The Nine Billion names of God (1953) and lastly my personnel favourite because it mixes crime & Sci-Fi together which is rare occurrence - All the Time in the World (1951). With over 100 stories in this book you are bound to find quite a few that do not appeal to you. The White Hart Pub stories were in the main very nervy and there are a lot of them - it also seemed apparent to me that the author from the 1960s onward put all his energies into his novels and therefore his short stories in the main suffered and perhaps that's why he didn't write many of them from this date. This book would have been 5 star rated had it not been for the tedious stories that I have mentioned above.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lo mejor y más completo (en historias cortas) que se puede encontrar de Clarke (en Inglés)
Reviewed in Mexico on 17 November 2017

Al parecer contiene toda, TODA la ficción corta (osea, no novelas como 2001) en Inglés de Clarke (116 relatos) EXCEPTO "At the Mountains of Murkiness" y "When the Twerms Came".
