About the author

Sean McMullen is an award winning Australian author working in science fiction and fantasy. He has written over seventy stories and seventeen books, and has a PhD in Medieval Literature from the University of Melbourne.
In 2011 his novelette Eight Miles was runner up in the Hugo Awards, and he has won Poland's Nova Fantastyka for Voice of Steel and the Analog Reader's Award for Tower of Wings. His books, stories and articles have won another twelve awards in Australia.
His first internationally published novel was The Centurion's Empire, which featured a time machine built during the Roman Empire. This was followed by the Greatwinter trilogy, set in a post-apocalyptic Australia ruled by a caste of psychopathic librarians, and his four volume Moonworlds series, which saw McMullen use his unique blend of science and romance in a fantasy setting.
His most recent series is the Century War series for young adult readers. Set in 1901 Melbourne, Before the Storm has been reviewed as The Terminator meets the Bronte Sisters.
Sean's non-fiction work includes the non-fiction Strange Constellations, a history of Australian science fiction jointly written with Van Ikin and Russell Blackford. He also co-wrote the first histories of Australian fantasy and horror with Steven Paulsen.
Sean works full-time in scientific computing, and in what's left of his spare time, he is a third dan black belt in karate, and teaches at the Melbourne University Karate club. People have called him a renaissance man: the question is, which renaissance?

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 July 2009Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseA great read, loved the plot and enjoyed following the different characters - watching them change and unfold into even more developed characters whilst the plot drove events forward in the post-Apocalyptic setting. Definitely a worthwhile read if you enjoy character development, great plots and a post-Apocalyptic feeling to your stories!
Glad I was able to grab a copy!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A believable alternate future history unlike any other
Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseMcMullen creates a believable alternate future history unlike any other. Perhaps the plot devices of whales' to some degree controlling humanity through a telepathic "Call," and of a "Star Wars"-type missile defence gone haywire halting technological progress might be too much to swallow, but I loved the series and have re-read it at least once each volume. jm

5.0 out of 5 stars If you are looking for something new and original, here it is!
Sean McMullen is a fellow Aussie but I won't let that cloud my judgment. The book is a page turner from the begining. It is fast paced and broad in scope. Sean has a rich imagination and has created a fascinating and very dangerous post apocalyptic (is there such a word?) Australia.
This is one of a 3 part series. The other two novels are equally as good and if you read the first one you will have to get the others.
Also read "The Centurians Empire" and "Voyage of the Shadowmoon" by the same Author.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very interesting apoalyptic series.
Get the first book in the series and read them all.
I highly recommend this. Some of the best sci-fi I have read
with a very interesting primative high-tech twist.
A steam-punk like world!!
