I’m reviewing the 1980 Futura paperback first published 1969 in the UK.
This collection contains eight stories first published 1966-1968. I liked almost all the stories, in part because there’s a fair bit of continuity featuring Beowulf Shaeffer, the two-headed Puppeteers, and the Kzin, which provides good background for Niven’s ‘Ringworld’.

Please note that my main motivation for reviewing is to give an easily accessible list of contents to those browsing through anthologies on Amazon. I keep my comments brief, intending to give just a brief scene-setting hint, as I'm concerned that in the detail I might give away too much of the storylines. Here is a list of the contents together with a brief scene setting comment or quote (definitely not plot spoiling):

Neutron Star (1966): Beowulf Shaeffer is blackmailed by a Puppeteer into investigating why one of their General Products ship hulls failed to protect those inside.

A Relic of the Empire (1966): Dr Richard Schultz-Mann is studying the plant-life on a previously unknown planet when he is disturbed by ‘pirates’.

At the Core (1966): Beowulf Shaeffer is persuaded by a Puppeteer to visit the centre of the galaxy in a newly designed spacecraft.

The Soft Weapon (1967): Jason and Anne-Marie Papandreou, despite the reservations of their employer, the Puppeteer Nessus, divert their ship to investigate a supposed stasis box signal, only to be ambushed by Kzin.

Flatlander (1967): Beowulf Shaeffer finds a drinking partner, ‘Elephant’ who turns out to be exceedingly wealthy and bored. They end up asking the Outsiders to recommend an unusual planet to visit.

The Ethics of Madness (1967): Douglas Hooker’s a paranoid dependent on his autodoc for sanity. Unfortunately the autodoc fails.

The Handicapped (1967): Garvey of Garvey Ltd is interested in whether he can provide any prosthetic services to the (almost) limbless Grogs.

Grendel (1968): Beowulf Shaeffer gets pulled into investigating the kidnapping of the kdatlyno sculptor Lloobee.

This is the epitome of SF short stories. You will never find a greater collection of mind boggling thought provoking stories than this. You might want to try " Inconstant Moon " and "Tales of Known Space" as well by the same author.

This book is exciting, always something new. Having multiple short stories make it interesting enough that you would look further into Ring World and other books of Known Space by Larry Niven.

Will keep you up late reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Neutron Star highly entertaining

Neutron Star is a fascinating and entertaining collection of stories. Set in "Known Space", it introduces a variety of the themes and races later used or referenced in Mr Niven's Ringworld, the award winning classic. Puppeteers, Kzin, General Product hulls, Slavers, ram ships, organleggers and the hyperdrive are all explored in these stories. The characters and stories are scientifically anchored and logically consistent but most importantly, the characters are fascinating and the plots highly entertaining. Strongly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars Love the stories... the text needs a good proofread.

I bought the eBook version of Neutron Star to replace my paperback version. I bought that version off the rack in a drugstore in 1981 and Mr. Niven just signed the cover at Dragon*Con 2013. I'm going to seal it in plastic and never open it again.

These stories introduced me to both real hard science fiction and to Larry Niven's "Known Space". I've enjoyed his style and his characters for 32 years. The stories hold up well and the places where science has caught up with fiction are easy to overlook.

In the eBook version there are, I'm afraid, a couple of almost unforgivable typos and/or OCR errors. The worst one so far? In the story "Flatlander" Elephant's ship's nickname converted to "5700"... It's full name is "Slower Than Infinity" so you can probably guess what the nickname should be. These kinds of errors are keeping me from feeling truly comfortable with buying eBooks for a first read. If I hadn't already read my paperback version 10 or 15 times I might have just passed "5700" as being weird and nonsensical and blamed the author... (I'm not sure if it is in this volume or the last one I read but "under" scanned as "tinder" - looking at the shape of the letters it's easy to see how that could happen...) My point is that this is an easy fix. Proofread the books before they are posted.

I'd appreciate it if someone can tell me who to blame for this...

    Bottom line:

5 stars for the stories - Loved them then, love them now.
3 stars for the scan and the apparent lack of a proofreading...

    You can do the math.

I got a few pages in and was having a hard time getting into it so set it aside for awhile. Then I picked it up again and realized how much depth there was to it. A series of interconnected stories with crazy ends to some parts of it. The ending itself was enjoyable and I can't help wishing there was more. However, I find danger in prequels and sequels. Frankly, this work stands on its own and has no need for more. It just makes me want more.
