A scintillating collection of stories from the master of science fiction.

Since the beginning of his career in the 1940s, Ray Bradbury has become synonymous with great science fiction from the pulp comic books of his early work to his adaptations for television, stage and screen and most notably for his masterpiece, ‘Fahrenheit 451’.

Bradbury has done a rare thing; to capture both the popular and literary imagination. Within these pages the reader will be transported to foreign and extraordinary worlds, become transfixed by visions of the past, present, and future and be left humbled and inspired by one of most absorbing and engaging writers of this century, and the last.

This is the second of two volumes offering the very best of his short stories including 'The Garbage Collector', ‘The Machineries of Joy’ and ‘The Toynbee Convector’.

In a career spanning more than seventy years, Ray Bradbury, who died on June 5, 2012, at the age of 91, inspired generations of readers to dream, think, and create. A prolific author of hundreds of short stories and close to fifty books, as well as numerous poems, essays, operas, plays, teleplays, and screenplays, Bradbury was one of the most celebrated writers of our time. His groundbreaking works include Fahrenheit 451, The Martian Chronicles, The Illustrated Man, Dandelion Wine, and Something Wicked This Way Comes. He wrote the screen play for John Huston's classic film adaptation of Moby Dick, and was nominated for an Academy Award. He adapted sixty-five of his stories for television's The Ray Bradbury Theater, and won an Emmy for his teleplay of The Halloween Tree. He was the recipient of the 2000 National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, the 2004 National Medal of Arts, and the 2007 Pulitzer Prize Special Citation, among many honors.

Throughout his life, Bradbury liked to recount the story of meeting a carnival magician, Mr. Electrico, in 1932. At the end of his performance Electrico reached out to the twelve-year-old Bradbury, touched the boy with his sword, and commanded, "Live forever!" Bradbury later said, "I decided that was the greatest idea I had ever heard. I started writing every day. I never stopped."

Ray Bradbury was one of the Science Fiction writers of the 1950s and 1960s whose style when young I most admired and hoped to emulate if I were ever tempted to write SF myself. Today, his rather too ornate descriptions and sometimes over-flowery language are perhaps less popular now that the sheer wonder of science fiction has given way to a less romantic and florid approach to its writing. Nevertheless, Bradbury remains an author who can evoke a variety of responses from his reader, ranging from wonder and delight to the sheer dread summoned by the supernatural and unexplained.

In this second volume of his short stories, there are really very few hard 'Science Fiction' stories such, but Bradbury nevertheless mines the dark world of the unexpected and unexplained that lies on the SF periphery. The author places his characters and situations that often overwhelm them: indeed the collection begins with one of his the most frightening stories, of a woman walking by herself at night despite reports of a local serial killer that packs a real punch on the last page. These narratives are interspersed with some of Bradbury's gentler and warmer stories, such as the' Rocket', a make-believe trip to Mars laid on by a father for his children, and the sheer and very touching outcome to' No News, or What Killed the Dog?'

A very good Kindle version of this book with a full index available as a very reasonable price. Highly recommended.

While there are some of the stories I enjoy, there are others like 'The fruit at the bottom of the bowl' that appeal to my eqully warped sense of humour. Bradbury's taste for the macabre and his superb use of language make him interesting and very readable. He is an arist with the spoken work, you can see, touch and taste his work and the scenes he creates with words and phrases. 'The Toynbee Convector' shows that he can also be upbeat.

Like all Ray Bradbury stories, they tend to be somewhat depressing. They are not science fiction but are very well written and have interesting twists. Not quite up to his "Something Wicked This Way Comes" but a good read as long as you don't do the whole book at once.

I used to read Science Fiction pulp magazines and paperback books back in the 50s and 60s (many bought from second hand book shops - no charity shops then - and new paperbacks cost quite a bit). I really enjoyed the short stories of Ted Sturgeon, Fredric Brown and of course Ray Bradbury, whose stories were so interesting and varied and full of imagination - leaving you wanting more. I bought all of Bradbury's books (published by Corgi in at two and sixpence in 1960 - and I still have them today - and NO I will not be selling them on Amazon. I am really pleased to get this huge collection for such a reasonable price from Amazon Kindle.

Great writer though not every story appealed to me. Great for Bradbury fans.

This is the 2nd volume from Ray Bradbury in a two part collection of some of his best short stories. It features 100 stories ranging from some of the Martian Cnronicles to lesser known stories set in Ireland and Mexico. Every story is a little gem. After reading this I'll be looking to get Volume 1, which I hear is even better than Volume 2.
The beauty of this volume is that the short stories are the perfect lenght to allow the reader to go through one or two a day, regardless of how busy you are.
Vintage imagination from a master storyteller.

Ray Bradbury - the best writer of all time in my opinion, and I don't mean just in any of the several genres into which he has been shoe-horned; I mean the greatest of all. So leaving aside the fact that at £3 for 869 pages, it's a steal - it's a great big 5 stars from me, and if I could double that, I would.

Pages are thin and grey, font is nice to read though.I expected it to be hard cover but it is actually not. I have a feeling it can loose its state pretty quickly.
