- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 April 2024I loved this novel so much. I brought it on kindle and then physically, fantastic little read powerful characters and an awesome twist that you won't see coming. Asher Darks is a name you will be seeing alot of in the future of splatterpunk. And I personally cannot wait to see what she writes next.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 September 2024Absolutely loved this for being a supernatural story! Nina has absolutely no love for herself at all. When she meets a gorgeous man he teacher her how to do so. Little does she know he has manipulated her to be his partner at a dinner party where she won’t make it out alive. My heart was in my throat the entire time hoping all would be okay and they would fall in love (they did) but there was no happy ending here. I felt emotionally invested and I can’t wait for more!

5.0 out of 5 stars A breath of fresh air in the genre.
I didn't think I would like it. I was correct. I didn't like it. I loved it.
This book follows a girl named Nina who has fallen in love with a vampire named Bastian. I won't spoil anything, but it has way more layers than a typical vampire romantasy.
There is gore, violence, death, love, hate, and passion. It's more about the story of a girl finding herself and being comfortable in her own skin than anything else , in my opinion.
It was honestly a breath of fresh air. Sometimes I feel like authors in the genre have to compete, or write certain things to "keep up with the times." Asher wrote a book like nothing else I've read this far. A superb retelling of an already classic creature.
This is Asher's debut novel and if the writing is already this engaging, I can't wait to see what else she releases!
I would highly recommend this to anyone that is into extreme horror/splatterpunk/fantasy/dark romance.

4.0 out of 5 stars Romance novel meets Splatterpunk
"Vampires & Whatever Else" tells the story of human Nina and vampire Bast, who happens to have all werewolf brothers.
Asher Dark's epistolary novella borrows from Fantasy and Horror favorites, thus, to give one example, we find the element of compulsion from The Vampire Diaries, and plenty of references to Twilight, Supernatural and indie Horror authors such as Judith Sonnet and Stuart Bray.
I cannot say much about the plot without spoiling it but it involves a scheme, true love betrayed twice over and is basically, from my understanding, an exercise in self-love in the wake of a lot of guts and blood flying around.
The genre of V&WE is a mixture of Splatterpunk meets Romance novel, which was new to me. I could see this story being an indie movie as well.
As almost all extreme Horror I read, the book is filled with excessive swearing. I don't mention ot because I mind it but because I always laugh to myself when I encounter it, due to always being fascinated by how aspects such as vernacular and choice or frequency of words can help shape a whole genre. The writing style was otherwise very casual and youthful.
The trigger warning at the start of the book was quite amusing to me the way it was worded, and I believe you cannot make any clearer that, yes, extreme Horror is, indeed, extreme.
I think this was Asher's first publication and I find it to be an incredibly brave choice that she ran with this story. I saw it mentioned fondly in several groups, so it was a success to introduce something so different.
As with all things indie, I have true compassion and a deep understanding of how frustrating it is not to be able to employ an editor. I have no doubt that with increased experience, there will be another round of editing, and that is the beauty of the indie world - there's always more gains to be had.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great first story!
I’m not much into sci/fi but the vampires caught my interest (more than the werewolves). But this book had me wanting more of both! The only reason I gave it a 4/5 is I wanted a romance ending after reading and was upset it wasn’t 😅
Absolutely amazing and will continue to read whatever and anything else Asher puts out!
