The Great Alta Saga: Sister Light, Sister Dark; White Jenna; and The One-Armed Queen Kindle Edition
One of fantasy fiction’s preeminent practitioners, Jane Yolen creates a world and mythology that are richly enthralling and vibrantly alive in this acclaimed trilogy.
Sister Light, Sister Dark: Three-times orphaned and raised secretly by the acolytes of the goddess Alta, the child Jenna studies the ways of the warrior in preparation for the day that has been prophesied. For she may well be the goddess reborn who, with the aid of Skada—her mirror twin who can reveal herself only in darkness—is fated to bring devastation to the world.
White Jenna: Grown to young womanhood, the warrior Jenna offers her allegiance to the rightful king of the Dales—and her heart to his brother, Carum—joining the fight against the malevolent usurper Kalas. But the powerful despot appears unstoppable, dedicated to the destruction of the worshippers of Alta, the society of women in which the orphaned Jenna was lovingly raised.
The One-Armed Queen: Having fulfilled an ancient prophecy, the Queen of the Dales must now keep her faltering kingdom safe from a looming terror, and prepare her chosen successor—a one-armed orphan girl she discovered on the battlefield—for the grim responsibilities of rule.
A sweeping adventure of destiny, peril, magic, and romance, The Great Alta Saga is a magnificent feat of storytelling that ingeniously blends world-building, myth, poetry, and song.

5.0 out of 5 stars Always a Favorite
I reread The Great Alta Saga every 5 or 10 years, and it is me just as hard each time. Love these books - the writing is beautiful and the story strange but honest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inventive, thoughtful fantasy
More fantasy than sword-and-sorcery, this series is a showcase of the author's multiple abilities: writing prose and poetry and composing music as well! The setting owes much to Yorkshire, England. It's a woman's world, with women finding refuge in settlements that are part religious, part military. But men aren't really enemies-- and not all men are the villains. The heroine is abandoned by her father because her mother died giving birth. She is believed to be the fulfillment of an ancient prophecy, and she's not happy about that. The series is her life: her coming of age, her discovery of her destiny and, in the end, her departure (it can't be called "death," because ... well, I won't give anything away). Yolen creates characters who are three-dimensional and situations, both political and social, that are credible. The plot moves at a somewhat slow pace at times, but all in all, I was impressed by the high standard of writing. Oh, and I also liked most of the main characters!

3.0 out of 5 stars Starts off great and then flounders.
Book one was unique and interesting. The interspersing of the "story" with the "myths, songs or nursery rhymes" behind the story and the "historical commentary" based on the "myths, songs or nursery rhymes" was a fascinating literary device. Until it wasn't.
By the middle of book two, it became a distraction. Book two also felt like it had a lot less conflict and drama, most of which was between the main character and her adopted daughter. So if you want to read about family dynamics, but in a quasi-historical setting, then book two is for you.
Book three had more conflict and drama than book two, but the resolution fell flat. The literary device that felt so fresh in book one was, by now, an annoyance. I slogged through book three.
Overall, the series started out great but then declined. Book three felt like an afterthought. Three stars for originality and good writing, but the consistent lack of compelling conflict in books two and three and the overuse of a literary device prevents a higher rating.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling action and great writing
I read these books when I was a girl and they definitely hold up to the great of time. These books are so powerful and gripping, I love so much thre last one especially. The familial conflict is written so believably and I love the fact that there doesn't have to be a love interest for Scillia. There is so much representation of different women, the main characters are flawed in such believable acts compelling ways, a must- read.
