- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 June 2024Into the Alternate Universe is a story in the long running John Grimes series by A, Bertram Chandler/
It is a short 138 page read that van be read in 3 hours flat.
If you read this book you will have to suspend your judgment a little. The book is slim and requires the reader to take it as 14-year-old reader would. Simple, easy to read, and a little dated. It is 60 years old and in science fiction was the hero is male with a glamourous female in the background then.
The plot is weak and short, 'ghosts of other vessels are found in the cracks in space, so we get ocean liners, the odd alien spaceship, and others in a graveyard of emptiness.
Short sweet and easy to read,
If you like this setup and character then you are in luck there is a long set of five full-length novels featuring the titular hero John Grimes.
Secondhand copies abound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finding Love in Alternate Places
I read this in high school. It's standard pulp sci-fi but a decent novel. Captain John Grimes and Sonya Verrill, a planetary government official, concoct a project to investigate the phenomenon of "Rim Ghosts" --people seen at the edge of the galaxy, sometimes people they even knew, people who were now dead. Is there an alternate universe that is able to be entered from the Rim?
Sonya Verrill has an ulterior motive to enter the alternate universe. A tragic love triangle and a terrible space accident--the man she thought she loved lost to her. Could she find love again in the alternate universe.
The situation when they do enter the Rim is fascinating and unusual. It takes the combined efforts of a medium in a seance and dowsers (those people who find water and other object by means of a rod or forked stick) to save the ship. And what they find in the Rim is startling.
This is like nothing I've ever read. It's a bit cheesy and cliche in many aspects. but the creativity of the plot is one that makes it worth reading as classic science fiction. This is part of an Ace Double Novel. The companion novel, The Coils of Time, is not nearly as good, but not a bad read, either.
