- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 April 2008Charles Harness was a trained scientist and lawyer as well as a gifted science-fiction writer, and some of his work shows evidence of exciting ideas clearly thought out, expressed in a lyric prose. Unfortunately that's not really the case in this particular collection of stories - the science is very woolly and Charles Harness' tendency to emotional, operatic denouements is indulged here - so these stories are OK if you like that in your future fiction. But for slightly space-operatic science-fiction of a much higher quality, try the author's "Rings" collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent collection of short stories by a master.
While these 17 stories vary in quality, there are enough true masterworks to more than justify the purchase. "The Rose", by itself, would almost do so. Many of these stories are have been very difficult to find in any publication for some years. One of them, "Lethary Fair", is never before published. Having them conveniently assembled makes this volume a treasure.
Ranging from somewhat predictable plots to amazing concepts that stretch the imagination, from wry humor to soaring poetry, every reader should find several stories to match their desires. The book contains a supplementary tribute by George Zebrowski, letting us get an overview of the author's publishing career. It also has an extensive Bibliography by Priscilla Olson, listing the various publication dates of the various stories and the sources in which they appeared. There are also two short prefaces giving insight into Mr. Harness' lengthy career (over 50 years, and still writing).
To the reader, it is not only the "plot" that can fascinate, but the manner in which the story is told. Mr. Harness has the gift of captivating.

4.0 out of 5 stars Delightful Collection from Charles Harness
There is quite a lot of variety in the 17 odd stories here. A few I found uninteresting and a few more were flat out silly. But SF tastes vary widely, so I'm not going to specify the ones I didn't much like.
Instead I'm going to name the three which - all by themselves - justified the purchase price for me.
"Probable Cause" is a touching tale about the US Supreme Court and psi. (If only the current court had even a fraction of the integrity described here!)
"George Washington Slept Here" was a non-stop surprise - and a total delight.
"Summer Solstice" tells about an encounter between Eratosthenes and a space alien named Khor who has landed his meteor-riddled ship in Alexandria. Nothing short of wonderful in my opinion!!
