Dramocles: An Intergalactic Soap Opera Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 12 ratings

An ordinary king finds himself on an extraordinary quest in this intergalactic soap opera by the acclaimed sci-fi author and “precursor to Douglas Adams” (The New York Times).

Dramocles, an ordinary king on an ordinary planet, finds himself thrust into an adventure that combines soap opera, Greek tragedy, and Shakespearean drama as he unwillingly—and disastrously—seeks to fulfill his destiny. Unfortunately, that destiny is only revealed to him piece by piece. In the meantime, Dramocles manages to foment an interplanetary war, precipitate the disintegration of his family, lose all his friends, and uncover betrayal among his closest advisers as barbarian invaders besiege his realm.

Top reviews from United Kingdom

  • Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 December 2003
This book is certainly worth the read. To anybody familiar with the works of Jack Vance, Sheckley's deliberately ludicrous descriptions and appellations are immediately familiar (although undoubtedly done in fun !).

Dramocles is a king with a destiny, but ... he does not know what that destiny is yet ! Although not one of Sheckley's best books, there's enough in the unfolding tale to keep the reader entertained. After a bit of scene-setting and some minor characterisation, the story settles into a "fantasy" routine but then transforms halfway through, taking us back into more familiar Shecklian paranoia.

With a few exceptions (most notably the dire "Journey of Joenes", also known as "Journey Beyond Tomorrow") Sheckley can write side-splitting fiction that is both imaginative and original. Any of his short-story collections is worth reading, and the novel "Dimension of Miracles" is absolutely essential.

In the meantime, if you enjoy this book, then read his earlier stuff -- a real treat awaits !!!

Anything Robert Sheckley wrote is thought provoking, and this book is not an exception. Definitely relevant now, after all the years since it was written.
