Damiano's Lute (The Damiano Trilogy Book 2) Kindle Edition
This novel is a sequel to Damiano. Set against the turbulent backdrop of the Italian Renaissance, this alternate history takes place in a world where real faith-based magic exists. Our hero is Damiano Dalstrego. He is a wizard’s son, an alchemist and the heir to dark magics. Shattered by the demonic fury of his dark powers, Damiano Delstrego has forsaken his magical heritage to live as a mortal man. Accompanied only by the guidance of the Archnagel Raphael, the chidings of a brash young rogue, and the memory of a beautiful pagan witch, Damiano journeys across a plague-ridden French countryside in search of peace. But the Father of Lies reaches out once again to grasp him. And to save himself from the hellish destiny that awaits him, Damiano must challenge the greatest forces of darkness, armed only with the power of his love and the music of his lute. The final volume of this story is Raphael.

About the author

Hello, all. I write under the name R.A. MacAvoy, although my call-name has always been Bertie. I have been writing for publication for some forty years. I was given the John W. Campbell Award in 1983, for my first novel in the Speculative Fiction Field, much to my astonishment. That year I also was granted the inaugural Phillip K. Dick Award, which still was a piece of hand-calligraphed paper without a frame. I was overwhelmed by that one, actually, as I think Phillip Dick was a very important writer and I’m glad they thought of me.
For me, now, to describe what I do as a hobby and where I live, is somehow meaningless. I can mention I once ran a small stable, called Shanachie Stables, raising a few good Connemara Ponies, just as I am now running a very small House, called Shanachie Press, hoping for a few good books. I was a diver in Northern Pacific waters for years, learning night diving, mixed gasses and rescue diving. Much of my life has been spent in the martial arts, with emphasis on self-defense rather than competition. Shall I say that I wove a great deal of clothing and decorative hangings over the years? Or that I grow orchids? I mean – forty years? I don’t know where to begin.
And by now I have had so many polished author photos that I am here only including a snapshot my husband, Ron, took of me on our upper storey deck.
Oh! I have also been on the New York Times Bestseller list many times. But then, it is really not so hard to get on the New York Times Best Seller List. Stephen King wrote a very funny article about that.
If you are young to the S.F. field and don’t know who I am, I will prep you by warning that I often kill off my heroes, sometimes at the most unexpected times. But never in a depressing manner. I’ve never wanted to depress my readers. My outlook is essentially comic.
My latest book, just released, is a collaboration with Nancy Palmer, called Albatross. It is wildly genre-bending. Breaking, perhaps. The sequel, Shimmer, is expected to be wackier.
I can only hope you enjoy my work. That’s what writers do hope, after all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tissue warning!
While the book is beautifully written, the Kindle version is less than perfectly transcribed, causing me to struggle with the text. Still I enjoyed it quite a lot, although there were spots when I needed a tissue. I am glad I had Raphael, the third book in the trilogy, ready to go.
What I liked was the exploration of love and personal responsibility. There are hard choices to be made and they have significant consequences. I am impatient to find out how this trilogy concludes.
If you enjoy philosophical fantasy, this could be your cup of tea. Do start at the beginning of the series as you need that background to understand this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stupendous!
The Damiano trilogy. 'Damiano', 'Damiano's Lute' and 'Rafael', are among the top fantasy novels ever. They are not just 'fantasy', they are literature. The characterization and the historical accuracy are wonderful. The magic is that of the time and place and the characters are also of the time and place--not modern characters plunked inelegantly down in an alien world. You must read these books!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Worthy Sequel
I was pleased to find that the first book in this trilogy (mostly) lived up to my fond memories of it, but the second book didn't hold up quite as well. The main problem I have with it is that the plot is very slight - most of the novel coasts along relying on the reader's affection for the existing characters... while subtly shifting focus from Damiano to Gaspare.
Still, the characters do charm, and the downbeat ending packs one hell of a punch. I had remembered the gist of it, so I was aware of the wheels turning, so I was surprised to find myself wiping away a few tears anyway.
Not that there is anything wrong with what these books are - light, entertaining adventure fantasies - but I honestly think that if MacAvoy had been encouraged to develop her themes more fully, these books would have merited a much wider readership.
Still and all, I've held on to my copies for 25 years or so, and I won't wait so long to reread them next time. That's a pretty good recommendaton, I think.
ps. As of the date of this writing, the Kindle edition is full of errors and typos. Maybe pick up a copy in print, unless another reviewer notes that this problem has been corrected.
