Caniemail's Sixth Birthday 🎂

Today marks the sixth anniversary since I officially unveiled Can I email. I still fondly remember the cheers I got from the crowd as I revealed the site after my talk at Smashing Conf.

Six years after, Can I email is still up and running. From 50 HTML and CSS features tested across 25 emails clients at launch, we now have more than 300 features tested across 41 email clients.

In the past year, the site received over 130 000 visitors and generated more than 170 000 page views. (According to Matomo.)

The site now lives a pretty steady life and everything’s going well. Right?
Everything’s going well, right?

Well, sure. But as the content grows and grows, it’s taking more and more time to add new features, new email clients and make sure the existing content is up to date. And while I know I can count on the email geeks community to report major changes in the big email clients and update the site in a timely manner, I must also be honest and state that some data regarding more obscure features in less popular email clients might not be exactly up to date.

The problem is that, since day one, everything here is done manually, from writing tests to testing to reporting and updating the site. And it’s about time we change things a bit and start automatizing things. (And just for saying it loud: no, we can not and will not use any big lying “Homework Machine”.) But just like I had this feeling we could have better tools to learn about HTML and CSS support in emails six years ago, I feel like we can have better tools to test HTML emails right now.

To help us with this, we’re excited to welcome our very first sponsor: Resend. I’ve been working at a slow pace on updates for the past several months. But a few noteworthy updates made it. So here’s a recap of what’s been updated:

Updates to :active and :focus on Apple Mail 16 (thanks to @M-J-Robbins).
Updates for support in Proton Mail for the <hr> element and the text-decoration-line property (thanks to @nico3333fr).
Some behind the scenes spring cleaning, like adding the accessiblity tag to the [dir] feature (thanks to @husseinalhammad) and removing duplicate entries in certain properties (thanks to @germain-gg).

I’ve also recently been tipped that the french email clients of SFR and La Poste dropped support for <style> tags. I was told this was done in response to the Kobold letters security report. The lack of <style> support also means as a result the loss of support for @media queries (and any other at rules like @keyframes or @font-face), pseudo classes (like :hover) and pseudo elements. With this update, SFR (desktop webmail) went from 226 to 196 features supported, falling from the 5th place to the 8th place in our scoreboard. LaPoste.net (desktop webmail) went from 205 to 176 features supported, falling from the 8th place to the 16th place.

I’ve started pushing some more updates to the site, starting with merging PRs and sorting issues.

A few random nonetheless interesting updates:

Web.de desktop webmail no longer supports <style> tags. (See #446.)
Samsung Email supports absolute positioning… but not with values in percent. (See #444.)
Apple Mail and Gmail on iOS no longer support orientation: landscape media query. (See #415.)
Gmail on Android no longer supports CSS gradients inline, but only when using background-image or both background and background-image at the same time. (So use background:linear-gradient(…) and not background-image:linear-gradient(…) nor background:linear-gradient(…); background-image:linear-gradient(…);. Or use non inline styles for this.) (See #395.)

This follows Orange’s desktop webmail update from 2021. The good news is it makes support more cohesive across all of Orange’s email clients. The bad news is it takes away a lot of features that were previously supported.
