A 12-WEEK ONLINE FILM STUDIES COURSE
(July-October, 2026)

In this original 12-week online film studies course, to be delivered via Google Meet, we’ll explore world cinema through twelve films from twelve different countries, making a virtual journey east the long way around the globe from Spain to Cuba.

Each week will begin with an original lecture presentation on the selected movie and the national film tradition, followed by an in-depth group discussion. All participants will have a chance to contribute. The only weekly homework will be to watch a film in your own time. There will be no final exam or essay. This course is designed for exploration and discovery.

The group will be limited to a maximum of 12 participants.

Online course: Postwar Japanese Cinema (1949-1966) (starting May 24)

This original film studies course, presented on Google Meet, will comprehensively explore the cinema of Japan between 1949 and 1966 through twenty feature films.

The course will cover some of the most acclaimed films in cinema history, including the work of legendary Golden Age directors Akira Kurosawa, Yasujirō Ozu, and Kenji Mizoguchi. We will examine Japanese genres (jidaigeki, film noir, kaiju, horror, the yakuza film) and the birth of pop culture icons Godzilla and Zatoichi. The latter part of the course will discuss films associated with the Japanese New Wave by Ōshima, Imamura, and others.

The class is limited to a maximum of 12 students. The session will start with an original lecture presentation followed by an in-depth group discussion. All participants will have a chance to contribute. The only weekly homework will be to watch the set films in your own time.

Online course: Classics of French Cinema (1930-1953) (starts April 25)

This original film studies course, presented online via Google Meet, will comprehensively explore a formative period of French Cinema through 20 classic features, including some of the most celebrated films of all time—La Grande Illusion (1937), The Rules of the Game (1939), Children of Paradise (1945), Beauty and the Beast (1946), and The Wages of Fear (1953).

PART A of the course will examine the evolution of Poetic Realism in the 1930s – focusing on such directors as Jean Vigo, Jean Renoir, and Marcel Carné. In PART B we will explore the continuation of the French film industry under the Nazi occupation of 1940-44. PART C will cover the immediate Postwar era, including the work of directors Jean Cocteau, Jean-Pierre Melville, Jacques Tati, and Max Ophüls.

Online course: The Hollywood Studio System (1927-1949) (starts Jan 2026)

This original film studies course, to be delivered via Google Meet, will examine the Hollywood Studio System through 23 features, 3 animated shorts, and an episode of a serial.

After introductory weeks examining the Transition to Sound and the onset of the Production Code, we will study one-by-one each of the key studios—the ‘Little Three’, the ‘Big Five’, as well as the B-movie studios on ‘Poverty Row’. The story ends with the Paramount Decree and the Blacklist, both of which transformed Hollywood forever.

We will discuss representative studio films from a range of classic genres (screwball comedies, westerns, musicals, swashbucklers, romance, horror, gangster pictures, and film noir) from many of the greatest directors in Hollywood history—including Hitchcock, Chaplin, Ford, Wilder, Hawks, and Lubitsch.

Online course: Dark City Confidential: A New Look at Classic Noir (starts Nov 15)

­­A 12-WEEK ONLINE FILM STUDIES COURSE (November 2025- February, 2026)

In this original 12-week online film studies course, to be delivered via the Google Meet platform, we’ll study 18 key films of Classic American Film Noir (1941-1961) as well as 7 pieces of hardboiled and noir fiction. The lectures will explore these films through the stories of their production and in the wider context of American society, history, and politics. We’ll also examine the careers of the major directors and writers.

Classes are limited to a maximum of 12 students. Each week I’ll give an original lecture presentation on a set film and theme and then lead an in-depth group discussion. All participants will have a chance to contribute. The only weekly homework will be to watch a film (or two), and sometimes read a short story. There will be no final exam or essay. This course is designed for enjoyment and discovery. All are welcome.

Weekly session: Saturdays at 9am PT/12pm ET [North America] [which is 5pm UK time/6pm CET].
