Appearances[edit]
Video Games[edit]
Digital Monster Ver. S: Digimon Tamers[edit]
Evolution generally follows the same rules, mechanics, and paths as in the Digital Monster Vers. 1–4 virtual pets, from which Ver. S is adapted. All evolutions are one-way, and occur as in-game time elapses depending on how the Digimon is raised.
Unlike the original virtual pets, training has no influence at all on how a Digimon evolves. Instead, the Digimon's affection for the player — i.e. how much the player has interacted with the Digimon on the home screen, and how the Digimon reacts to the player's interactions — affects what the Digimon will evolve into in the same way that the number of times the Digimon undertakes training does in the original virtual pets.
As in the original virtual pets, evolution to the Perfect Generation is not guaranteed. Once a Digimon has fought the required minimum of 15 battles to qualify to evolve to Perfect, this is marked on its stat screen by the "Win Rate" label turning red instead of blue.
New Digitama[edit]
As the player progresses through the game, they will become able to obtain the New Digitama 「NEW デジタマ」 item. This item may be used to fuse any two Digimon of Child Generation or higher into one of five new Adult Digimon species that did not exist in the Digital Monster virtual pets: Gorimon, Gesomon, Tailmon, Evilmon and Gokimon.
The resulting Digimon is determined based on the Attributes of the two original Digimon, in the order in which they are selected for use in the New Digitama:[1]

Any other attribute combination not charted above, including any two Digimon with the same Attribute, will result in Gokimon.
Digimon Fragments[edit]
Additionally, all Adult and Perfect Digimon from Vers. 1–4 are associated with a "Digimon Fragment" 「デジモンのかけら」 item. Using a Fragment on a compatible Digimon guarantees that when the time comes for the Digimon to evolve, it will evolve into the species corresponding to the Fragment, regardless of any evolution requirements. There are no Digimon Fragments for any of the "Ver. S" Digimon.

Digimon World[edit]
Digimon evolve after reaching a certain lifespan:
- Baby I → Baby II: Guaranteed to occur after ~6 hours pass.
- Baby II → Child: Guaranteed to occur after ~1 day passes.
- Child → Adult: May occur after ~3 days pass.
Baby I Digimon can only evolve into a single Baby II Digimon, but afterwards, Digimon will have several possibilities for their evolutions. Which Digimon they will evolve into, if any, depends on specific conditions they meet, such as their stats, how many moves they have, how many care mistakes they have, how many attacks they've learned, how many battles they've had, etc.
Evolution is one-way in Digimon World. The only exception is Scumon, who can be returned to its previous form by talking to Great King Scumon in Trash Mountain.
Special Evolution Methods[edit]
Beyond the normal evolution lines, some evolutions can be obtained through special means.
- If a Baby II Digimon sleeps in Kunemon's Bed, it has a 50% chance to evolve into Kunemon.
- If a Digimon poops too much outside of the toilet, filling its Virus gauge, it'll evolve into Scumon.
- If a Child Digimon is scolded while having its Happiness at its minimum, it'll evolve into Nanimon.
- If a Child Digimon fails to meet any evolution conditions when the evolution time comes, it'll evolve into Numemon.
- If a Birdramon or a Seadramon has max Happiness and Discipline, then goes to sleep with no Tiredness, it has a 30% chance to evolve into Airdramon.
- If a Drimogemon has max Discipline and Defense, then goes to sleep, it has a 30% chance to evolve into Monochromon.
- If a Shellmon or Whamon has lived exactly 200 hours and gets praised or scolded, it has a 30% chance to evolve into Coelamon.
- If a Vegimon has max Discipline and fights 50 times, then goes to sleep, it has a 30% chance to evolve into Igamon.
- If an Adult-level Digimon is at least 15 days old, has a Discipline below 50%, and is then scolded, it has a 50% chance to evolve into Vademon.
- If the player interacts with the Monzaemon plush in Toy Town with a Numemon as their partner, said Numemon will evolve into Monzaemon. Unlike the previous examples, Numemon can also naturally evolve into Monzaemon.
- If the player brings a Mamemon to the Guardromon who offers to remodel for 2000 bits, there are three possible outcomes:
- "It didn't work": nothing happens.
- "It was successful!": 0,45% chance. Mamemon evolves into Metal Mamemon.
- "It didn't work, but...": 0,11% chance. Mamemon evolves into Giromon.
- Death Evolutions (10% chance of triggering after being defeated in battle):
- Any Child Digimon > Bakemon
- Angemon > Devimon
- Birdramon or Cockatrimon > Hououmon
- Metal Greymon or Megadramon > Skull Greymon
Evolution Items[edit]
Most Adult and Perfect Digimon are associated with a matching evolution item. Using one of these items on a Digimon of a compatible Generation will immediately evolve it into the item's matching Digimon, with no further evolution requirements.

Digital Monster Ver. WonderSwan[edit]
Digimon Adventure: Anode Tamer & Cathode Tamer[edit]
For the most part, evolution is not a mechanic in and of itself. However, there are two related mechanics:
- Digimon can learn Variable Moves which, according to a Nanimon, temporarily evolve them into the target Digimon long enough to perform one of its attack techniques.
- Three Digimon—Numemon, Otamamon and Bakemon—evolve into, respectively, Scumon, Gekomon and Soulmon when they are traded between players.
Additionally, the main antagonist Millenniumon is the result of a fusion between Mugendramon of the Dark Masters and a Chimairamon. In the final dungeon, Millenniumon is fought first in the form of either Chimairamon or Mugendramon, before returning to its true Milleniumon form to be fought again.
Digimon World: Digital Card Battle[edit]
In the second phase of each player's turn, the Evolution Phase, players are given a chance to evolve their current Digimon card in play. The standard way of performing an evolution is spend a specified amount of Evolution POW 「進化POW」 points, which are accumulated in the Evolution Phase by selecting one card per turn to send to the POW Box 「POW置き場」, to evolve the Digimon card in play into one selected Digimon card of the next Level up. There are many Option Cards that can be played instead to bypass the usual requirements.
Any Digimon card is capable of evolving into any Digimon card that a) is of the next Level up, and b) shares the same Attribute/color.
Evolution cannot usually be undone. The only way of doing so is to use the Option card Devolution 「退化」, which discards the top card of your Digimon and returns it to its previous stage, with doubled HP.
Pocket Digimon World, Wind Battle Disc, & Cool & Nature Battle Disc[edit]
Digimon World 2[edit]
Digimon can be evolved by talking to the Evolution Operator of the player's Guard Tamer team, once they have met the minimum required level:
One level after evolving, the Digimon will learn every technique of their level that their current form, as well as the Digimon that were Jogressed into them, can learn. What Digimon will be born from an evolution is decided by both the previous Digimon and their current EP (Evolution Points).
All forms of evolution are completely one-way in Digimon World 2.
Jogress[edit]
Digimon of the Adult Generation or higher can also be Jogressed through Evolution Operator.
In Digimon World 2, Jogressing two "parent" Digimon will create one new Digimon, who will be one Generation lower than its lowest-Generation parent. (e.g. Jogressing two Adult Digimon, or one Adult and one Perfect, will result in a Child Digimon.) The newly created Digimon will have a higher maximum level than its parents, based on their own levels, as well as 1 more EP than whichever parent had the highest EP. Furthermore, the newly born Digimon will be able to learn every move of its parents once it reaches certain levels.
Digimon Adventure 02: Tag Tamers[edit]
Fundamentally, once a Digimon gains enough experience points, it will automatically evolve into the next available Digimon in its evolution line. A Digimon's evolution line is pre-set based on which of the 70 distinct Digitamas, identified by both a name provided by Digitamamon and an unseen number, to which it belongs.
Evolution is one-way and cannot manually be reversed, but once the Digimon reaches the end of its lifespan—i.e. once their lifespan (Y) stat gets high enough, signified by a cross appearing next to them in menus—it will revert to its Baby I form and lose all EXP and learned techniques, starting its evolution from the very beginning.
Additionally, some evolution lines feature two Adult, Perfect and/or Ultimate forms. In these cases, one Digimon of a given level (the "higher" Digimon) can only be evolved into if the Digimon has any Digimental equipped, and otherwise, it will evolve into the other Digimon of that level (the "lower" Digimon). Likewise, in some cases where there is only one Ultimate form in the line, a Digimon cannot evolve into that Ultimate form unless it has a Digimental equipped.
Jogress[edit]
Gaining access to new evolutions revolves around Jogressing Digimon at Digitamamon's Jogress Room. Any two Digimon who are at Child level or higher may be Jogressed together to produce a Digitama, which immediately hatches into a Baby I Digimon. The resulting Digitama is based on which Digitamas the two parents belonged to or, in certain special cases, their Digimon species at the time of Jogressing, and Jogressing certain combinations of Digitamas will yield particular Digitamas.
Digitamas are sorted by a rank system from 1 to 9, and Jogressing will often result in a Digitama of a higher rank than the parents. In addition to having increased stats, higher-ranked Digitamas generally have greater access to more powerful Digimon and/or Digimon of higher Generations. This also includes better variants of the same evolution lines, which add Digimon of higher Generations.
- For example: There are two Digitamas that yield V-mon. The first that they player can encounter is Digitama #1 (rank 2), the "V-mon" Digitama. The furthest that a V-mon of this Digitama line can evolve, assuming it meets all other requirements, is to its Adult form, XV-mon, and the evolution line ends there.
The second is Digitama #22 (rank 4), the "Imperialdramon" Digitama, which is formed by Jogressing an XV-mon from Digitama #1 with a Stingmon from Digitama #2 (rank 2), the "Wormmon" Digitama. This line adds Paildramon and Imperialdramon as, respectively, Perfect and Ultimate forms, so a Digimon belonging to the Digitama #22 line (assuming it meets all other requirements) can evolve all the way to Imperialdramon.
Every time that a Jogress is performed, the resulting Digimon will gain Jogress Points (JP). In addition to the EXP requirement, Adult, Perfect and Ultimate Digimon may only be evolved into if the Digimon also meets a minimum JP requirement for each; both EXP and JP requirements get progressively higher for higher-ranked Digitamas.
Armor Evolution[edit]
Five Digimon species—V-mon, Hawkmon, Armadimon, Patamon, Tailmon—may also use Armor Evolution, which works as a special type of attack technique. Having a matching Digimental equipped allows the Digimon to learn the resulting Armor Digimon's attack technique; using this technique in battle will cause it temporarily evolve into that Armor Digimon long enough to perform that attack techniques, before returning to its original form.
Digimon Adventure 02: D1 Tamers[edit]
In Digimon Adventure 02: D1 Tamers, both natural evolution and Armor Evolution work near-identically to how they did in Digimon Adventure 02: Tag Tamers, save for the following changes.
For natural evolution:
- There are now a total of 79 Digitamas. Some Digitama evolution lines from Tag Tamers have been altered or moved to a different identifying number.
- A new rare item, the JogPlus 「ジョグプラス」, is introduced. Using it gives the chosen Digimon 5 JP, helping to speed up gaining enough JP to meet evolution requirements. Although it is rare, it can still be infinitely farmed by repeatedly playing through the dungeons in which it can spawn (Plush Tower, Angel Tower, Undead Box, any of the Four Holy Beasts' dungeons).
- A tenth Digitama rank is added, exclusive to new Digitama evolution lines that yield two bonus Digimon: Archnemon (#21) and Mummymon (#79).
- In the Jogress Room, Digitamamon now directly tells the player the identifying number of the Digitama of any Digimon in their party.
- The mechanic of certain Jogresses requiring that parents be of particular species within a given Digitama line has been removed entirely. Results are now consistent regardless of parents' current form.
- A Digimon's lifespan coming to an end may be delayed by equipping a Digimental of Life.
For Armor Evolution:
- Armor Evolution techniques do not need to be learned by winning a battle like before. Instead, as long as the appropriate Digimental is equipped, the Armor Evolution technique is automatically available in the Digimon's sixth technique slot (reserved for techniques bestowed by equippped Digimentals).
Digimon World: Digital Card Arena[edit]
Natural evolution works identically to how it works in Digimon World: Digital Card Battle.
Digital Card Arena adds a new mechanic, Armor Evolution, as an alternative to natural evolution. Armor Evolution is available to the six Partner Cards—V-mon, Hawkmon, Armadimon, Patamon, Tailmon and Wormmon—but requires that the player obtain the corresponding Digimentals for each Partner Card by progressing through the game. If the player has at least one Digimental for a given Partner Card, then as soon as they play that Partner Card on the field, they are given the option to use the Digimental to evolve the Partner Card into the corresponding Armor Digimon with no further cost. However, Armor Digimon cannot evolve any further, unless they are devolved back to Level III (Child) using certain Option Cards and are re-evolved into Level IV (Adult) or Perfect from there.
NPC Digimon who originate from Digimon Adventure and Digimon Adventure 02 will evolve over the course of the game. Upon evolving, they will have different, stronger decks, and are counted as different characters for wins/losses. The Digimon Adventure 02 partner Digimon specifically have Extra Arenas in which they battle the player using all of their evolution stages. Wormmon does not have an Extra Arena, but he can still be fought in all of his stages except Gran Kuwagamon in Dark City's Battle Arena.
Digimon Tamers: Battle Spirit & Ver. 1.5[edit]
Playable Digimon can temporarily evolve by touching Culumon, who appears halfway through each match. As long as they are evolved, they are entirely invincible and are able to use much more powerful attacks. Culumon only appears once per battle, thus only one evolution can happen per match.
In the original Digimon Tamers: Battle Spirit, Impmon is unable to evolve, and if he touches Culumon, Culumon is forced to despawn. Ver. 1.5 adds in an evolution for him: Beelzebumon: Blast Mode.
Digimon Tamers: Battle Evolution[edit]
Ten playable Digimon are able to evolve during matches: Agumon, Gabumon, Patamon, Tailmon, V-mon, Wormmon, Guilmon, Renamon, Terriermon, and Impmon. Each of these Digimon has one evolved form, which gives them a new, stronger set of moves. Their evolved forms can also be unlocked as separate playable characters by clearing the 1P Mode with the respective base Digimon.
All playable Digimon possess an Evolution Gauge that fills as they deal damage in a match. Once the gauge is full, Digimon who can evolve undergo evolution. The Evolution Gauge slowly depletes over time while they are evolved. Once the Evolution Gauge empties, the Digimon devolves to its previous form. The evolved Digimon can also expend the gauge at any time to use their most powerful attack technique, but devolve immediately upon the technique's completion or interruption. Digimon who do not evolve can use their most powerful attack technique only when their Evolution gauge is full. This expends their entire Evolution Gauge, but does not devolve them.
Digimon Tamers: Brave Tamer[edit]
Digimon RPG[edit]
Digimon World 3[edit]
Digimon have two different kinds of evolutions in Digimon World 3:
- Natural evolutions
As a partner Digimon's Level increases, it will unlock the ability to evolve into the natural Adult (at Level 5), Perfect (at Level 20), and Ultimate (at Level 40) forms of its evolution line. For example, this is how Agumon gains the ability to evolve into Greymon, Metal Greymon and War Greymon. - Optional Evolutions
Partner Digimon can unlock additional evolved forms outside their natural evolution line by meeting certain criteria for each evolution, including:- Leveling up one or more of their individual evolved forms to a prerequisite Skill level (e.g. V-mon gains the ability to evolve into Stingmon once its natural evolution, XV-mon reaches Skill level 30)
- Increasing their stats or element resistances to a prerequisite value (for example, one of the criteria for Agumon gaining the ability to evolve into Skull Greymon is a Darkness resistance stat of 130 or higher)
All eight partner Digimon can potentially access every evolved form in the game through optional evolutions.
A Digimon can equip up to three evolutions that they have learned at a time. They can switch between these and their base form at any time in-battle by using a turn, and one form can be assigned as their "Battle Evolution" so that they will start all battle encounters in that form. Evolutions can be equipped and unequipped by talking to Dr. Kadomatsu in the Asuka City Digimon Lab, or to Piccolomon in other locations.
Jogress Evolution[edit]
Certain compatible pairs of Digimon can Jogress Evolve, which in this game just acts as a powerful attack that requires an MP cost from both participating Digimon. It can be activated in the Tag menu, as an alternative to just tagging out, and any Digimon that can be Jogressed with are marked with a red orb icon in that menu. When activated, a cutscene will show the two Digimon Jogressing and performing one technique in their Jogressed form, before switching to the Digimon that was part of the pair that was not in-battle when the Jogress was activated. The majority of Digimon that can be Jogressed are also available as regular evolution options, but there are three who only appear by Jogressing, all of whom are from Digimon Frontier.

Blast Evolution[edit]
In battle, Digimon have a Blast Gauge that fills up as they take damage. Once it is full, they will immediately undergo Blast Evolution: a temporary evolution into a more powerful form that lasts for several turns. While Blast Evolved, they will have automatic access to that form's Special Move, and all techniques (both Special and loaded) can be used without any MP cost. If a Blast Evolved Digimon is switched out or evolved into another form, the Blast Evolution state ends. Most of the time, a Digimon will Blast Evolve into their next natural evolution that they have not yet unlocked until Level 39, when they unlock their Ultimate form; after Level 39, they will Blast Evolve into other Ultimate Digimon.
Digital Monster: D-Project[edit]
Battle Spirit: Digimon Frontier[edit]
There are two types of evolution that Digimon can undergo in battle. When their Evolution Gauge is filled, they can enter a state where, whenever they attack, they will temporarily Slide Evolve into their Beast Form Hybrid form and perform a stronger attack. The Evolution Gauge slowly decreases over time, and Slide Evolution ceases once it is empty.
When a Digimon collects five gold crystals, they are able to perform an Ancient Spirit Evolution. If they make contact with the enemy while initiating the evolution, they will evolve into one of the Warrior Ten (or Susanoomon for the Extra Agnimon and Wolfmon) and unleash one immensely powerful attack, at the cost of emptying the crystal gauge.
Digimon Battle Chronicle[edit]
Fourteen playable Digimon are able to evolve during matches: Agumon, Gabumon, Piyomon, Tentomon, Patamon, Tailmon, Gomamon, Palmon, V-mon, Guilmon, Flamon, Black Agumon, Black Gabumon, and Black Guilmon. Each of these Digimon has two evolved forms, which each give them a new, stronger set of moves.
All playable Digimon have an Evolution Gauge that fills as they collect orbs of energy, that are dropped by all fighters in a match when they are hit. Each time it fills, they are able to evolve to their next form. Their evolution lasts until they are KO'd, at which point they will respawn in their previous form.
When the Evolution Gauge is filled while a Digimon is fully evolved, or if the Digimon cannot evolve (like the rest of the playable fighters), they become able to use an "Ultra" finishing move.
Digimon Racing[edit]
Digimon can evolve by filling their evolution gauge, which can be done by driving over data patches. Evolution is automatic whenever the gauge reaches particular thresholds. All Digimon begin races in their Child forms (or as Agnimon), with their evolution gauge half-full (1 1/2 bars). If the gauge reaches 2 bars full, they evolve into their Adult forms (or Vritramon, in Agnimon's case); if it reaches a full state (3 bars), they can spend part of their gauge to use their Special Move. Every time a Digimon takes damage, their evolution gauge is depleted. If it falls below one full bar, they devolve to their Baby II form (or Flamon, in Agnimon's case).
Digimon World X[edit]
Digimon Story[edit]
Evolution can be managed from a Digimon's stats profile, under the Evolution Route option. Because of this, Digimon in the player's party may be evolved or devolved at any time the player chooses outside of battles. Evolution in Digimon Story is based around pre-set evolution lines, where each individual Digimon species has a short list of Digimon that it can evolve into (usually one, occasionally two or three) and not every Digimon has any possible evolutions. To evolve into a particular Digimon, a Digimon must first meet that Digimon's minimum evolution requirements such as level, attribute EXP, stats, Friendship, and Stress all meeting certain thresholds (in the case of Stress and, in some rare cases like Devimon, Friendship, it must not exceed a maximum threshold).
In some special cases (like Dot Agumon), the Digimon may only be evolved into if the player has previously owned a Digimon of the same species, or if they presently have 100% scan data for it.
Some Digimon, such as Armor Digimon, also require that the player obtain a matching item (e.g. a Digimental for Armor Digimon) before they can evolve any Digimon into them. These items are not consumed by the evolution process, so once they have been obtained, the Digimon can be evolved into as many times as the player wants.
Upon evolving, a Digimon's stats increase, while upon devolving, they decrease. Level may increase or decrease depending on the Digimon's current level and the base level of the Digimon it's becoming. In both cases, it gains a new Trait if it's the first time it's taken its current form, and its techniques change to those of its current form. Every time a Digimon devolves, its Aptitude stat increases, and evolution may also increase Aptitude. This increases the Digimon's maximum level cap. However, the player can't devolve Digimon until obtaining Phil's Devolve Chip, and how high they can evolve is limited by their current Tamer Rank.
NPC Evolutions[edit]
Several evolutions and devolutions happen during the story:
- Black Agumon evolves into Dark Tyranomon off-screen after being defeated by the Player. As he explains later as Pagumon, this was a Dark Evolution born from the lack of a good Tamer. Later on, after being reborn as Pagumon, he retakes his true form of Andiramon (Deva) by using the Core Shard.
- Mugendramon devolves into Skull Greymon after using Phil's Devolve Chip, weakening him enough for the Player to fight him.
- Kain uses the Data Core on his Atlur Kabuterimon (Red) to evolve it into Gran Kuwagamon. However, the overwhelming energy of the Data Core causes it to go out of control, then self-destruct.
- After the Player defeats Chronomon Destroy Mode, he's cleaned of the darkness and becomes Chronomon Holy Mode.
- Daimon Masaru's Agumon evolves into Geo Greymon to fight King Etemon. Off-screen, Thoma H. Norstein's Gaomon evolves into Mach Gaogamon for the same reason.
Digimon Savers: Another Mission[edit]
Each of the six playable partner Digimon's evolutions are sorted into unique series of branching paths called Galaxies 「銀河」. To unlock an evolution, the player and Digimon must meet its evolution requirements (usually listed in the Evolution Map menu), which can include:
- minimum stat thresholds, like Digimon Story
- the Digimon's current emotional state
- gameplay performance statistics/records, both in general and for the Digimon specifically
- amounts of currency owned
- story events
Additionally, every other evolution that precedes a given evolution on its branch of the Galaxy must also have already been unlocked.
Once the criteria are met, a cutscene plays in battle in which the Digimon's Tamer performs a Digisoul Charge and evolves the Digimon into the unlocked form for the first time; in Agumon's case, Daimon Masaru will also punch an enemy Digimon to invoke his Digisoul, inflicting some damage on it. Once said battle ends, the new evolution becomes available to be freely equipped and unequipped as the Digimon's form in battle in the Evolution Map menu.
Digimon Story: Sunburst & Moonlight[edit]
The mechanics of evolution in Sunburst and Moonlight are mostly identical to those of Digimon Story. While evolving can still be accessed from Digimon's stat screens, the DigiLab PC at the player's Tamer Home also allows for easy access to managing evolution for all Digimon in the player's possession (in the party, bank, or Farm Islands alike). Evolution options are also somewhat expanded, and it is more common for Digimon to not only have more evolution options, but for those evolution options to have multiple evolution options themselves.
Sunburst and Moonlight also introduce Jogress Evolution, which is available under the "Special Evolution" menu of the DigiLab PC. There are many Digimon, including Digimon who are available through natural evolution, who can be formed by Jogress using specific combinations of Digimon (often, there are multiple viable combinations for Jogressing into the same Digimon). Like natural evolution, however, Jogress Evolution also requires that the new Digimon's minimum evolution requirements be met by the first Digimon selected to be used for the Jogress.
Unlike Digimon Story, Armor Evolution is now managed separately under the "Special Evolution" menu. Otherwise, it functions the same, with both the Digimental item requirement and the minimum evolution requirements.
Digimon Masters[edit]
Digimon can evolve by reaching certain levels: level 11 for Adult, level 25 for Perfect and level 41 for Ultimate. Evolution is temporary, and consumes the player's Digisoul. Some Digimon have stronger stages known as Burst Modes, these need specific items to be unlocked. Other Digimon have alternate Ultimate evolutions that also require specific items to be unlocked.
Jogress Evolution is also possible between specific Digimon.
Digimon Story: Lost Evolution[edit]
Evolution in Lost Evolution is similar to how it was in Sunburst/Moonlight. The main difference is the introduction of Evolution Trees, which group Digimon in them and show what they can evolve into, with some Digimon being able to move into other trees. Furthermore, not all evolutions are usable at first, with several of them being locked until the player finds and revives their Evolution Plates, which either drop from random encounters or are found as part of the story. Successfully reviving them and reinserting them into their corresponding evolution trees will allow the player to evolve into that Digimon, as well as unlocking other Digimon that may require that specific evolution (such as Geo Greymon requiring Greymon to be revived).
NPC Evolutions[edit]
Digimon other than the playable ones are shown evolving during the story:
- A Pico Devimon Shū/Kizuna and Asuka met while looking for the Black Box evolved into Devimon off-screen after Shū/Kizuna revived the Devimon Evolution Plate. Later, it is shown to have evolved into a Venom Vamdemon, and later still it returns as a Belial Vamdemon.
Digimon Story: Super Xros Wars Red & Blue[edit]
In Digimon Story: Super Xros Wars Red & Blue there are also two extra different types of DigiXros: DigiFusion (デジフュージョン Dejifuyūjon), which is akin to Jogress Evolution in previous titles where the components permanently fuse into the result, and Jogress Up (ジョグレスアップ Joguresu Appu), a power up ability that allows a base Digimon to permanently enhance their stats by absorbing and combining other Digimon.
Digimon World Re:Digitize & Decode[edit]
Similar to the original Digimon World, Digimon evolve after reaching a certain lifespan:
- Baby I → Baby II: Guaranteed to occur after a few hours pass. Each Baby I Digimon can only evolve into one Baby II Digimon.
- Baby II → Child: Guaranteed to occur after a day passes. There are five possibilities for each Digimon, which they evolve into depends on their highest stat and their current weight.
From Child onwards, evolution is not guaranteed and Digimon need to meet a number of criteria to evolve, depending on the Generation they are evolving into (3 for Adult, 5 for Perfect, 6 for Ultimate). Criteria are unique to each evolved form, and can include:
- battle stats (HP, MP, Attack, Defense, Speed, Intelligence)
- Weight
- care mistakes (both can be above or below a certain number)
- Happiness
- Discipline
- number of battles fought
- learned Techniques
- Tamer/Decode level
While evolution is completely one-way in gameplay, for the purposes of the game's story, Digimon can devolve if they use too much energy, at which point they are unable to evolve again at will. This happens to both V.V. (from Aero V-dramon to V-mon, then from Ulforce V-dramon to V-dramon) and Tyranomon (from Rust Tyranomon to Tyranomon) during the Scheme of the Demon Lords chapter. The crossover characters from the different anime series use their own rules and methods; Izumi Kōshirō speculates that the difference in their evolution lies in their different Digivices.
Certain evolutions require specific criteria to be fulfilled before they can be accessed. These include:
- Story progression: Beelzebumon, Rust Tyranomon, Alphamon, Mugendramon.
- Digimon to be returned to the Village of Beginnings: Monzaemon.
- Victories in the Colosseum: War Greymon ("Taichi and Agumon's Evolution!"), Metal Garurumon ("Yamato and Gabumon's Friendship!"), Garudamon ("Sora and Piyomon's Love!"), Magnamon ("Radiance of Miracles"), Dukemon ("Takato and Guilmon"), Lilithmon and Seraphimon ("Angels and Demons")
- Death of a previous Digimon: Victory Greymon (Dukemon), Z'd Garurumon (Metal Garurumon)
If Taiga talks to Great King Scumon in the Underground Waterway Labyrinth, he can turn Digimaru into a Scumon or, if Digimaru is currently a Scumon, revert him into his previous form.
Evolution Items[edit]
Most Digimon of Adult Generation and higher are associated with a matching evolution item. Using one of these items on a compatible Digimon will automatically evolve it into the item's matching Digimon with no further evolution requirements.
The items are implied to be left-behind data of dead Digimon. Lili obtains Lilithmon's from her corpse, and several evolution items are found behind Bolt Unlocker doors, prisons, in the Digitower 70th floor.

NPC Evolutions[edit]
Several NPC Digimon characters evolve during the course of the story:
- During the story, Vitium evolves twice. It starts as Vitium Baby, becomes Vitium Adult before the party meets it again in Signpost Woods, and reaches its ultimate state as Vitium Ultimate for the final battle.
- After being defeated by Vitium Adult, Nicolai Petrov and Sashenka trained for six hours in the Village of Beginnings' Gym. This made Sashenka evolve from Gaomon into Gaogamon. Later on, at some point before the team battle against Rindou Akiho and Kuga Yuuya, he evolved into Mach Gaogamon. For the 40th floor Free Battle: "Let's have a Showdown", he evolves into Mirage Gaogamon.

Digimon Crusader[edit]
Evolution is a fairly long process, but becomes easier as you get further into the game. Most Digimon require other Digimon of a certain type and level to be used as evolution material. The Digimon you wish to evolve must be temporarily replaced in your party with another Digimon. When you select the Digimon you want to evolve, you are given 1 or more choices of Digimon to choose from, each with a different requirement.
The evolution requirements are: Your Digimon to be at its maximum level, at least 1 or more Digimon at a certain level, a number of Data dropped by a Digimon of a matching type, and a large number of Bits.
For example, in order to evolve Greymon to Metal Greymon your Greymon needs to be Level 20, you must have 10 Red Perfect Level pieces of Data, A Red Digimon at level 8, a Blue Digimon at level 3, and a Purple Digimon at level 3. The Bits charged will depend on the Digimon.
Digimon Adventure[edit]
Evolutions are unlocked as story events as the player progresses through the game, corresponding to the moments in which they were obtained in the Digimon Adventure anime. During the first appearance of each evolution (including Skull Greymon), a cutscene will play, adapting their evolution stock footage from Adventure with in-game graphics and with "Brave Heart" playing. They will then remain evolved for free for the rest of the battle.
Digimon start at the Child level, except for Tailmon who starts at the Adult level and cannot go below it. While the Baby II to Child evolution of the first episode of Adventure, "Adrift? Island of Adventure!" does happen in the game, it is purely a cutscene, and the Baby II-level Partner Digimon are not playable. Other moments when the Chosen Children's Digimon dip below Child also do happen in the game as they do in the anime, but they just become non-playable during these segments. The same applies to Tailmon's Child form, Plotmon.
Unlike the Adventure anime, the Adventure game allows all eight partner Digimon, not just Agumon and Gabumon, to gain the ability to evolve into their Ultimate forms. These forms are obtained through six optional battle events after the first fight with Apocalymon, which are unlocked if the player's individual bond ranking with their respective Chosen Child is at least 35. Upon starting these battle events, the respective Chosen Child will evolve into their Ultimate form for the first time (featuring new evolution cutscenes created for the game).
Mechanics[edit]
After the unlocking story event, the Digimon (excluding Skull Greymon, which is fully unplayable) can be evolved at the player's discretion in battles, and will remain evolved for the duration of the battle unless the player chooses to evolve them again or devolve them. The original evolution cutscene will not replay, and the evolution will instead be depicted as a brief, spinning animation.
With the exception of the initial unlocking event, in which the newly unlocked evolution is free of cost, evolving a Digimon requires paying an SP cost that corresponds to the Digimon's Generation:
If a Digimon is already at a higher Generation than Child, that Generation's cost is subtracted from the overall cost of their next evolution.
Evolving increases stats, resets lowered stats, removes status effects, and changes the Digimon's moves for stronger ones with a higher SP cost. Digimon may also begin fights evolved by equipping the EVO Boost DigiPiece line, which let them start battles in higher levels depending on the level of the DigiPiece itself, from 1 to 3.
In New Game+, the player is able to fuse Agumon and Gabumon into Omegamon. This works differently from other evolved forms:
- Both Agumon and Gabumon must be in the party and currently evolved into War Greymon and Metal Garurumon.
- The fusion costs 0 SP, not counting any SP costs paid to evolve into War Greymon and Metal Garurumon.
- The Digimon that initiated the fusion forms the basis of Omegamon, in that a) Omegamon only inherits that Digimon's equipped DigiPieces, and b) the evolution animation only shows this Digimon.
- War Greymon and Metal Garurumon's remaining HP and SP at time of fusion are averaged out, with Omegamon keeping that percentage of his own HP and SP.
Special Events[edit]
In addition to the below, some event battles will allow the Digimon to start the battle in their evolved forms. In some cases, the events will replay their evolution cutscenes, most notably before the second Apocalymon fight which, as in the Adventure anime, replays every Digimon's evolution cutscenes as the Adventure anime did.
| Episode(s) | Human/Digimon Pair | Description |
|---|---|---|
Episode 23: |
Agumon and Yagami Taichi |
During this episode, Agumon is incapable of evolving, due to Yagami Taichi's worries that Agumon would evolve into Skull Greymon again. As such, the Evolution command is unusable and the EVO Boost I DigiPiece will have no effects.
This is resolved by the end of the chapter, allowing Agumon to evolve normally again. |
Episode 26: through to Episode 44: |
Even after being reborn and evolving back into his Child form, Patamon remains unable to evolve into Angemon again in any of his playable appearances until Episode 44, as in the Adventure anime. | |
Episode 53: |
Gabumon and Ishida Yamato |
Ishida Yamato's anger and doubts cause Gabumon to be unable to evolve to face Kiwimon. (This only affects the story, as Gabumon is not playable during this part.) |
Episode 62: |
All playable characters |
In the Chosen Children's first encounter with Apocalymon, it uses Death Evolution to return all of the partner Digimon to their base forms. (This only affects the story, as Apocalymon is incapable of using this move in-battle.) |
Episode 64: |
Agumon and Yagami Taichi and |
Agumon and Tentomon can initially only evolve as far as their Adult forms, due to their time apart from Taichi and Kōshirō.
During their fight against Infermon in the same chapter, they attempt to super evolve into their Perfect forms, but Infermon attacks them during the evolution and stops it. (Parts of Metal Greymon's footage are played during this cutscene, though without "Brave Heart" playing.) This restriction is lifted in Episode 65, "Our War Game, Middle", allowing them to evolve all the way to Ultimate once again. However, EVO Boost pieces beyond EVO Boost I will have no effect on Agumon and Tentomon, but they will on Gabumon and Patamon. |
During the crossover episode, all the guests will have their Digimon take the highest level they could in their own series without fusing. While their base forms appear in the game as well (with the exception of Gumdramon), they exist only in the story. Their unique evolution methods (Armor Evolution, Matrix Evolution, Spirit Evolution, Super Evolution) are neither named nor commented on, other than Kanbara Takuya evolving into a Digimon, though even in this case no more detail is given.
NPC Evolutions[edit]
Digimon other than the playable ones are shown evolving during the story:
| Episode(s) | Digimon | Description |
|---|---|---|
Sub-Episode 2: |
A Pyocomon from the Pyocomon Village evolves into Piyomon due to eating a DigiTomato. This Piyomon is the boss of the Sub-Episode, and devolves into Pyocomon after being beaten in battle and exhausting its energy. | |
Episode 17: |
A Botamon that hatched from a Digitama in the Village of Beginnings evolves into Koromon. | |
Episode 27: |
Upon being sent falling into the abyss by Nanomon, Etemon fuses with the Dark Network and becomes Etemon Chaos. | |
Episode 34: |
During the battle with Mammon, Taichi remembers his childhood encounter with a Koromon, and how that Koromon evolved into Agumon and Greymon. | |
Episode 48: |
Upon the fulfillment of the prophecy, Vamdemon is resurrected as Venom Vamdemon. | |
Episode 54: |
Having survived a hellish world following his defeat, Etemon is reborn in the evolved form of Metal Etemon to take revenge on the Chosen Children. | |
Episode 54: |
Repeated exposure to the light of the Chosen Children's Digivices during their adventures on File Island grants Leomon the ability to Warp Evolve into Saber Leomon. However, he has poor control over this evolution and cannot stay evolved for long. | |
Episode 64: |
A Kuramon that hatched from a Digitama on the Internet rapidly evolves into Tsumemon and Keramon. During its first encounter with the Chosen Children, it evolves into Infermon, skipping the Adult Generation entirely. | |
Episode 65: |
When confronted by War Greymon and Metal Garurumon, the Infermon evolves one last time into Diablomon. |
Digimon All-Star Rumble[edit]
Every playable Digimon has two evolutions. Obtaining enough EP will allow a Digimon to evolve into their next stage. While the first and second stage are unique for each character, some of the thirds are shared between two characters (for example, Agumon and Gabumon both evolve into Omegamon).
Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth & Hacker's Memory[edit]
Evolutions are managed at Mikagura Mirei's DigiLab. The mechanics of evolution in the Cyber Sleuth games are similar to those of the earlier Digimon Story games. Almost every Digimon has a list of Digimon that it can evolve from and evolve into. To evolve into a particular Digimon, a Digimon must first meet that Digimon's minimum evolution requirements such as level, stats, Ability, and Camaraderie all meeting certain thresholds. The only requirement to devolve is that the player has previously encountered the Digimon to be devolved into. Every time a Digimon evolves or devolves, its Ability stat increases, which makes it easier to evolve into forms that require higher minimum Ability.
Jogress Evolution can be performed between certain pairs of Digimon. This works the same way as regular evolution, except that the the player must also have the other component Digimon for the Jogress and both Digimon must have maximum Camaraderie. Once the Jogress has been performed, the Jogressed Digimon is treated like any other Digimon in terms of further evolution or devolution: that is, the Jogress cannot be "undone" to get both component Digimon back, and instead, the Jogressed Digimon can only be devolved into either one of the component Digimon forms.
Some Digimon, specifically Armor Digimon and Hybrid Digimon (although the latter are treated as regular levels in this game) also require that the player obtain a matching Digimental or Legendary Spirit item before they can evolve any Digimon into them. These items are not consumed by the evolution process, so once they have been obtained, the Digimon can be evolved into as many times as the player wants.
In the original version of Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth, Digimon can only evolve into members of the Royal Knights after completing specific late-game quests that each unlock the ability to evolve into one to three of these Digimon. Additionally, in both the regular release of Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth Hacker's Memory and the Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth Complete Edition release, there are some Digimon who can only be evolved into once Hacker's Memory has been completed.
NPC Evolutions[edit]
Several NPC Digimon characters evolve during the course of the stories.
- Shiramine Nokia's Agumon and Gabumon become capable of temporarily evolving as Nokia's adventures with them continue. They are depicted as evolving into Greymon and Garurumon (depicted only in Hacker's Memory), then War Greymon and Metal Garurumon. In Cyber Sleuth Chapter 10, during the fight at Under Zero, Nokia gains the ability to fuse them into their original form: Omegamon of the Royal Knights.
- When Sanada Arata accompanies Aiba Takumi/Ami or Amazawa Keisuke as a partner, his Keramon is seen in higher evolved forms as the games progress: Chrysalimon, Infermon, and Diablomon.
- In Cyber Sleuth Chapter 14, a Numemon successfully tricks Takumi/Ami into defeating multiple Shakomon for their shells. It then absorbs them, causing it to evolve to Karatuki Numemon. Now that the Tamer had done their job, it attempts to kill them as they had supposedly outlived their usefulness but this instead resulted in its death via self defence.
- In Cyber Sleuth Chapter 15, Kamishiro Yuuko's Rize Greymon evolves into Gaioumon when she asks it whether it will stay with her, even though she is no longer using the Kamishiro Yuugo avatar. In the same chapter, Mikagura Mirei has her Angewomon & Lady Devimon fuse together to become Mastemon.
- In Cyber Sleuth Chapter 19, Lucemon of the Seven Great Demon Lords evolves to Lucemon: Falldown Mode then Lucemon: Satan Mode but is defeated in all three battles with its third defeat resulting in its death. Belphemon: Sleep Mode evolves to Belphemon: Rage Mode with its second defeat also resulting in its death. In the same chapter, Etemon angrily evolves to Metal Etemon and tries to save his best friend Tawa Reiko after she was kidnapped by Jimmy KEN. It teams up with Keisuke and is able to defeat the Hacker, only for Reiko to appear and state that she hadn't been kidnapped and was friends with Jimmy and had been invited to the concert - not kidnapped.
- In Hacker's Memory Chapter 7, Sistermon Blanc and Sistermon Noir (Sistermon Ciel in some versions) evolve to their Awakened forms to fight Nokia and Amasawa Keisuke.
- In Hacker's Memory Chapter 11, a Togemon evolves to Lilimon after drinking Nanomon's potion that was intended to cure its illness. It had a side effect however, causing Togemon to go on a rampage. After Keisuke defeats it, it comes back to its senses then evolves to Lilimon with Nanomon figuring that must've been a side effect of the medicine it had created. Whether that is actually the case is unknown. Regardless, it decides it will create more of it and give it to other Digimon so they become super powerful for its own amusement.
- In Hacker's Memory Chapter 13, Douguchi Lily's Kyubimon evolves to Taomon to fight Dagomon. In the same chapter, Yasu's Gaomon evolves to Gaogamon as a result of his happiness at being praised by Shiramine Nokia (who he had a crush on) after he and Amasawa Keisuke defeat a group of evil hackers.
- Mishima Ryuji's Arkadimon evolves multiple times by absorbing other Digimon.
- In Hacker's Memory Chapter 16, Date Makiko's Lopmon evolves into Andiramon when she confronts Mysterious Digital Face.
- In Hacker's Memory Chapter 17, Imai Chitose's Ankylomon fuses with the Angemon that Yuri left with him to form Shakkoumon. In the same chapter, a Megalo Growmon angrily evolves to Megidramon due to a powerful desire to get revenge against Ryuji and Arkadimon who had killed and absorbed its friends with the exception of Leomon. It was unable to control the power though, and after being defeated by Leomon and Keisuke was able to revert back to Megalo Growmon...though it had to be talked down and told that its now deceased friends wouldn't want to see it in its current state first.
- In Hacker's Memory Chapter 18, Mishima Ryuji's Cyberdramon evolves into Justimon in response to Ryuji's determination to make amends. In the same chapter, Mishima Erika and Wormmon fuse together to become Hudiemon.
- In Hacker's Memory, after Keisuke defeats Volcamon in the Master Cup it evolves to Pile Volcamon. Keisuke then defeats it again.
- In Hacker's Memory, the Matadrmon that trolled Nogi Yuu by pretending to be a mask for years is defeated by Keisuke and reverts back to its mask form, which Yu throws away. At some point after that it evolved to Grand Dracumon and tries to take over the World via the Abyss Server but is killed by Keisuke and his friends. As it was a vampire though it was quickly reborn and tries again. This happens infinitely, though after the first time is just the game allowing the player to fight it as much as they want.
- Most characters evolve their Digimon offscreen as part of Domination Battles.
Digimon World -next 0rder- & International Edition[edit]
Similar to the original Digimon World, Digimon evolve after reaching a certain lifespan. The process is streamlined and easier compared to Digimon World Re:Digitize, and the amount of time that must elapse before evolving into a given Generation has been reduced.
The Evolution Dojo facility in Floatia provides a number of services that allow the player to directly affect the evolution of their Digimon:
- Grappu Leomon provides information on a Digimon's chances of evolving into its possible evolved forms. Once the Dojo has been upgraded to Level 2, Grappu Leomon also allows the player to block certain evolution paths, which can help to ensure that a Digimon evolves into a specific Digimon that the player desires.
- Paildramon allows the player to perform Jogress Evolution.
- Gran Kuwagamon allows the player to directly modify a Digimon's Discipline, Happiness, Weight, and number of care mistakes, in exchange for a fee.
Extra Cross Evolution[edit]
Extra Cross Evolution 「エクストラクロスエボリューション」, abbreviated ExE, is a temporary form of evolution in which the player's two partner Digimon fuse together into an "Ultimate Digimon that surpasses Ultimate" during a battle. ExE can only be used once per day.
In order to perform ExE, the following conditions must be met:
- At least one partner Digimon is Ultimate, and the other is, at minimum, Adult
- Both partner Digimon must have maximum Bond with the player
If these conditions are met, ExE may be triggered as an Order for both Digimon, at a cost of 150 Order Points per Digimon. There is also a small random chance that ExE may occur when both partner Digimon are KO'd in battle.
In the majority of cases, the Digimon that results from ExE is determined by the Elements of the two partner Digimon:

Jogress Evolution[edit]
Certain combinations of partner Digimon can undergo Jogress Evolution at the Evolution Dojo. When a Jogress Evolution is performed, one partner Digimon of the player's choosing will permanently evolve into the Jogressed Digimon, while the other partner Digimon will devolve by one Generation into their previously held form.

Chapter 4 |
When confronted in Infinity Cauldron, Analogman (possessing Tsuzuki Shoma) uses a process that he calls Altered Super Evolution 「変性超進化」 (Dub: Ultimate Altered Digivolution) to force Omegamon Zwart D into Omegamon Alter-B by breaking its mind. He developed this process after witnessing Yukimura's evolution into Skull Greymon, which taught him that breaking a Digimon's mind could cause the process of alteration to result in Digimon other than Mugendramon. | |
Chapter 5 |
A Keramon evolves multiple times as Takuto/Shiki and Shoma pursue it through Infinity Cauldron. Upon being defeated as Diablomon in the Core, it disappears into Dimensional Dimension M, and by the time Takuto/Shiki and Shoma reach it there, it has evolved again into Armagemon.
After its defeat, it moves into Floatia and frequently switches between all of its forms whilst there. | |
Chapter 5 |
If Takuto/Shiki accepts Imperialdramon's challenge and defeats it in the first round, it evolves into its Fighter Mode for the second round. Upon being defeated again, it evolves again into its Paladin Mode for the third and final round. | |
Chapter 5 |
When first encountered by Takuto/Shiki at Absolute Zero, Lucemon of the Seven Great Demon Lords evolves into its Falldown Mode to fight them. On their second encounter, it evolves again into its Satan Mode. | |
Chapter 5 |
Upon returning to the Roses Palace in Gluttony Wasteland and witnessing the mess that her former minions have made of it, Rosemon evolves into her Burst Mode in a rage. Takuto/Shiki have to defeat her to calm her down. | |
Chapter 5 |
Shine Greymon evolves into its Burst Mode to help defeat Chaosmon. | |
Add-On Scenario: |
The White Fang uses a machine to force Meicoomon to evolve into Meicrackmon: Vicious Mode after the, then banishes her back to the Next Order world (having already been there once before). Takuto/Shiki helps her to return to her original world for the second time, where Meicrackmon defeats White Fang. | |
Add-On Scenario: |
Piemon and Vamdemon are forced to Jogress into Voltobautamon by the Grudgeful Hand, who then possesses it in an attempt to destroy the World. After it is defeated, it clones the body, reverts the duo back to their prior forms, and then has friendly rematches with Takuto/Shiki. | |
Digimon Linkz[edit]
Digimon Universe Appli Monsters[edit]
Digimon ReArise[edit]
Digimon Survive[edit]
Natural evolution seems to be unheard of in the Digimon Survive setting. Evolution is only attainable through the power of human children, which makes them desirable to enemies. However, negative feelings in a human can lead to a Dark Evolution instead, where the Monster goes berserk, magnifying said human's negative side.
In gameplay, how evolution works differs depending on whether a Monster is a Partner or Free.
- For Partner Monsters, evolutions are unlocked at certain points in the story. Afterwards, they can evolve through the Evolution menu in-battle. While Monsters normally regain SP once a round is over, an evolved Partner Monster will instead lose SP (5 SP per turn for an Adult evolution, 10 SP for a Perfect one, 15 SP for an Ultimate one), and they need to pay the same amount to evolve. Evolution can also be undone through the Evolution menu. Partner Monsters will always start a battle in the Child level, which they also have throughout the story. Most Partner Monsters have specific evolution paths with very few deviations, though Agumon has three different choices for every level but Super Ultimate, which instead has two. Which he gets depends on which emotion is highest on Momotsuka Takuma's Karma meter: Moral will make him evolve into Vaccine-type Monsters, Harmony will make Agumon evolve into Data-type Monsters, and Wrathful will make him evolve into Virus-type Monsters.
- Usually, if a certain battle involves a partner Monster evolving during it, that partner will be forced into the starting board, and if they are slain anywhere in battle, the battle is instantly lost regardless of any remaining on-screen units.
- Agumon's evolution into Omegamon works in a slightly different way than the rest, as it is a Fusion with Gabumon. It costs 20 SP to evolve and maintain, and requires Gabumon (in any of his forms) to be deployed as well. Despite being a fusion of both Agumon and Gabumon, only Agumon can initiate it, it causes Gabumon to vanish from the field upon evolving, and Omegamon is considered to only be Agumon in-game. If Agumon then reverts to any previous form, Gabumon will reappear on the field in the exact same place and state he was in before the evolution.
- For Free Monsters, evolution requires the use of specific items (Mature Enlightenment Slabs for Adult-level evolutions, Perfect Enlightenment Slabs for Perfect-level ones, Ultimate Enlightenment Slabs for Ultimate-level ones), must be triggered from the Status menu outside of combat, and is permanent. Unlike Partner Digimon, Free Digimon have complex evolution trees, although they can only ever get one evolution per level as their evolutions cannot be undone. The DLC Digimon, Guilmon, only has one choice for each level.
- The player might obtain Enlightenment Slabs by negotiating with wild monsters, completing Deep Woods events (finite), completing certain events or destroying treasure chests that appear in Shadow battles. However, Perfect Enlightenment Slabs are only available from Part 5 onwards (the first instance being a Zudomon free battle in the dam), and Ultimate Enlightenment Slabs are only available from Part 9 onwards, first appearing in a treasure chest during a Shadow Encounter with Saber Leomon, and are not readily available until Part 11 of all common routes where they can be mass obtained through negotiation (in the Truthful Route, the Digimon that drop them on negotiation might appear as soon as Chapter 10). Mature Evolution Slabs are scarce in supply until around Part 11 and are only available in various non-repeatable events before then.
In either case, evolution increases stats and changes both the normal and special attacks of the evolved Monsters.
Partner Digimon Evolutions[edit]
Story-wise, evolutions occur as follows:
| Story evolutions in Digimon Survive | |||||
| Human/Digimon Pair | Part | Route | New Evolution | Description | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Momotsuka Takuma & Koromon | Prologue | N/A | Agumon | After meeting Koromon for the first time, Takuma is attacked by a Gottsumon. Koromon tries to protect him, which makes Takuma protect Koromon in turn. Realizing they were allies, Koromon evolves into Agumon. | |
| Momotsuka Takuma & Agumon | Part 1 | N/A | Greymon, Tyranomon or Tuskmon | During the fight against Dokugumon, Takuma wishes to run away in fear as they're overpowered by the powered-up Digimon, who had also called allies to the fight. However, Agumon convinces him not to give up, which gives Takuma the courage to continue. Agumon is then filled with power, evolving into his Adult form (Greymon, Tyranomon or Tuskmon, depending on Takuma's Karma Meter). | |
| Hinata Minoru & Falcomon | Part 2 | N/A | Diatrymon | After the party meets back with the Professor, Hinata Minoru wants to be a hero and protect him, but is too scared to do so. Falcomon convinces him that he can, which gives Minoru the courage to pursue his dream. This allows Falcomon to evolve into Diatrymon. | |
| Shibuya Aoi & Labramon | Part 2 | N/A | Dobermon | During the fight against Fangmon, Shibuya Aoi's underconfidence makes her scared. Labramon convinces her she is far more courageous than she realized, since she had not ran away yet. Aoi regains her courage thanks to that, which lets Labramon evolve into Dobermon. | |
| Kimishima Saki & Floramon | Part 3 | N/A | Vegimon | During the fight against Cyclomon, it calls out Kimishima Saki for not doing her best in combat and not genuinely caring about rescuing Tominaga Ryo, who he had hurt before. Saki is affected heavily by this, as she realizes he is right, and she only did what she did because she wanted to be seen as a good girl who did the right thing. Floramon tells her that she had an amazing heart and just needed to listen to it, which makes Saki realize that she truly did want to save Ryo. This allows Floramon to evolve into Vegimon. | |
| Tominaga Ryo & Kunemon | Part 4 | Truth | Flymon | When Kunemon is wounded protecting Ryo from Palmon, Piyomon and Patamon, Ryo wonders why Kunemon cares so much about protecting him, and why the other three were so stubborn since they didn't look serious; he realizes that made them like himself, never giving up even if it was pitiful. He acknowledges Kunemon's determination, and shows his own, emulating Takuma. This allows Kunemon to evolve into Flymon. | |
| Shinonome Miu & Shakomon | Part 4 | N/A | Shellmon | After Shinonome Kaito, Piyomon and Patamon are hurt protecting Shinonome Miu from Garurumon, in tears, she asks Shakomon what she should do, to which Shakomon asks her what she wanted to do. Realizing she does not want Kaito to die after fighting with him, nor Piyomon and Patamon after lying to them about being a sorceress, and she wants to protect them instead, she asks Shakomon to protect Kaito. Shakomon starts glowing, proclaiming how happy she is that Miu has been honest with her feelings, because her whole-hearted wish will make Shakomon as strong as Miu needs her to be. Shakomon then evolves into Shellmon. | |
| Kayama Shuuji & Lopmon | Part 5 | All routes except Truth | Wendimon (Dark Evolution) |
After Kayama Shuuji completely breaks down due to Archnemon's manipulations and his own weakness and trauma, he physically attacks his own Partner, Lopmon, after emotionally abusing him during their entire partnership. This causes Lopmon to be covered in a black fog, unlike the golden glow of a normal evolution. Shuuji continues to attack him to force him to evolve, despite Lopmon's fear, which ultimately causes Lopmon to Dark Evolve into Wendimon and go berserk as a response to Shuuji's rage. | |
| Truth | Turuiemon | After Kayama Shuuji completely breaks down due to Archnemon's manipulations and his own weakness and trauma, he physically attacks his own Partner, Lopmon, after emotionally abusing him during their entire partnership. This causes Lopmon to be covered in a black fog, unlike the golden glow of a normal evolution. Ryo intervenes and punches Shuuji, making him realize how terribly he treated Lopmon, when Lopmon had worked hard for his sake; and how he wasn't alone, everyone was with him, especially Lopmon. Now back to his senses, Shuuji acknowledges that he saw all of his own weaknesses in his partner despite said partner being so much stronger than himself. Lopmon is happy at finally being praised, which Shuuji had wanted to do for a long time, but in this moment, what he most wants is to protect everyone and live up to Lopmon's expectations of him, to be someone who Lopmon could be proud of and who could reward Lopmon's efforts, so he could live without regret. Shuuji's powerful feelings allow Lopmon to evolve into Turuiemon. | |||
| Momotsuka Takuma & Agumon | Part 5 | All routes except Truth | Metal Greymon, Triceramon or Megadramon | After Wendimon starts talking with Shuuji's voice about how he shouldn't exist, the group realizes that they are to blame for Shuuji breaking down, as they put the pressure of being a leader on him due to his age without realizing how it affected him. Agumon and Takuma decide to save Shuuji and Lopmon themselves, and Takuma realizes he wanted power to be able to challenge his feelings and anger. This triggers the evolution of Agumon into his Perfect form (Metal Greymon, Triceramon or Megadramon, depending on Takuma's Karma Meter). | |
| Truth | Takuma is motivated by Shuuji's growth and Lopmon's evolution, realizing that the desires to save and protect overlapped and turned into power, and also wants to make Archnemon pay for what she did to Shuuji. This triggers the evolution of Agumon into his Perfect form (depending on Takuma's Karma Meter). | ||||
| Professor & Gabumon | Part 6 | N/A | Garurumon | As depicted in a flashback set prior to the game's events, Gabumon evolved into Garurumon on his own as he wished to become stronger and braver to protect Haru. Unlike the other Partner Digimon, he kept this form afterwards. | |
| Shibuya Aoi & Labramon | Any time from Part 5 onward | N/A | Cerberumon |
Aoi wants to become more reliable, not for the others but for herself. When the group are attacked by a Kuwagamon, to their surprise as no enemies had come to the woods before, Labramon and Aoi agree they cannot beat that enemy, as they only had the power to protect, not to overpower, which Aoi wants so that she can properly protect everyone. Her resolve flows into Labramon, causing her to evolve into Cerberumon. | |
| Kimishima Saki & Floramon | Any time from Part 5 onward | N/A | Blossomon |
Saki worries about not being able to properly face Aoi, so she asks Floramon to pretend she was Aoi to practice. However, they are attacked by a Siesamon, who Floramon is unable to defeat. Saki proposes fleeing, but quickly stops herself, as doing so would put the rest in danger. In response, Floramon evolves; although Saki initially fears that she might turn into something creepy or uncool again, she becomes Blossomon. | |
| Shinonome Miu & Shakomon | Any time from Part 5 onward | N/A | Mermaimon |
When Miu fears that going home again would mean leaving Shakomon behind, Shakomon points out that Kaito would still be with her, but she senses an intruder coming, silences Miu and prepares to fight, despite Miu's skepticism that they could alone. The intruder is a Birdramon, who Shakomon cannot defeat. Miu decides not to always rely on her brother and to come out of her shell, but nonetheless feels frustrated and confused as she does not know what to do. Shakomon stops her panic, and Miu realizes that if she didn't know what to do, that only means that she must struggle even harder, and her intense desire to look ahead even against pain and struggle causes Shakomon to evolve into Mermaimon. | |
| Tominaga Ryo & Kunemon | Any time from Part 5 onward | Truth | Jewelbeemon |
While training together, Ryo and Kunemon are attacked by an Ikkakumon. Despite wanting to run away, Ryo relents and stays to help Kumemon, but Ikkakumon defeats Kunemon. Ryo blames himself, thinking anyone else could take the enemy on but he could only use brute force, not intelligence, so he puts himself between both Digimon to protect Kunemon, who does not want him to sacrifice himself for his sake. Ryo acknowledges Kunemon as his best friend and proclaims he will not let the Ikkakumon hurt him, and in response, Kunemon evolves into Jewelbeemon and gains the ability to speak. | |
| Kayama Shuuji & Lopmon | Any time from Part 5 onward | Truth | Andiramon (Deva) |
While training together, Shuuji and Lopmon are attacked by a Kabuterimon; since Shuuji is too exhausted from their training to flee, Lopmon, despite also being exhausted, stands his ground, but the Kabuterimon is too strong for him. This causes Shuuji's lack of confidence to resurface, as he accuses himself of being unable to anything and therefore unable to win anyone's approval as he is, despite how he sought his own before. Lopmon points out how, no matter how low he fell, he'd always believe in him. Shuuji puts himself between two to save his friend Lopmon, because he cannot give up in the middle of a fight if he was to make Lopmon proud of him. Shuuji's sense of responsibility and resolve causes Lopmon to evolve into Andiramon (Deva). | |
| Hinata Minoru & Falcomon | Any time from Part 6 onward | N/A | Yatagaramon |
While practising heroic phrases, Minoru is attacked by a Guardromon. Takuma and Falcomon come to his aid, and when Falcomon asks Minoru to stand back, he refuses as doing so would be unheroic. The Guardromon easily beats Falcomon, for which Minoru blamed himself for not being a hero. Falcomon disputes this, pointing out that he had already started growing, and that his pure feelings would give him strength. Falcomon affirms to Minoru that he believes that Minoru could make him stronger, as Takuma had with Agumon, and he evolves into Yatagaramon. | |
| Shinonome Kaito & Dracumon | Any time from Part 6 onward | N/A | Vamdemon |
When Dracumon scolded Kaito for angering Miu with his continued efforts to baby her, Kaito insists that he does it to protect her, not to win her over. A Kiwimon attacks them, and Dracumon and Kaito insist to Takuma that he let them handle it, but Kiwimon overpowers Dracumon. Kaito laments his inability to protect himself, much less Miu, but Dracumon asks him if he intends to give up, Kaito refuses and declares that he would take hold of any power at his disposal to protect Miu. This allows Dracumon to evolve into Vamdemon. | |
| Professor & Garurumon | Part 7 | N/A | Were Garurumon | After defending the Professor from an attack from Piemon, the Professor asks Garurumon to rejoin him as his Partner Kemonogami, as he does not want Minase Miyuki, Renamon or Garurumon himself to suffer any longer. The rekindling of their bond allows Garurumon to evolve into Were Garurumon. | |
| Momotsuka Takuma & Agumon | Part 9 | Moral | War Greymon | When Takuma expresses his determination to save Miyuki and go back to the Real World with the others, Agumon instructs Takuma to roar with him, as he needs to hear Takuma's voice. This causes Takuma's feelings to fill Agumon, giving him an incredible power and Warp Evolving him into War Greymon. | |
| Harmony | Dinorexmon | When the Kenzoku drive Takuma, Kaito and Aoi back, Takuma's resolve to not lose any more friends in Agumon cause him to Warp Evolve into Dinorexmon. | |||
| Wrathful | Mugendramon | When the Kenzoku drive Takuma, Kaito and Aoi back, Takuma's resolve to not lose any more friends incites a strange feeling of pain, yet excitement, in Agumon, who Warp Evolves into Mugendramon. | |||
| Truth | War Greymon, Dinorexmon or Mugendramon | After Baihumon proves to be too strong of an opponent to beat, Takuma refused to give up and be the one that caused their defeat, since then he couldn't protect Agumon or his world, especially since Baihumon would be the strongest ally if they could convince him to help. The resonance between Takumon and Agumon's feelings then allowed Agumon to evolve into his Ultimate form (War Greymon, Dinorexmon or Mugendramon, depending on which route the player chose in Part 8), in a process Agumon found painful yet exciting. | |||
| Hinata Minoru & Falcomon | Any time from Part 9 onward | N/A | Valdurmon |
While fighting a Marin Devimon who is too strong for them, Minoru and Falcomon decide to buy Takuma time to get Agumon and the rest. Falcomon asks Minoru to run away, but he refuses to. Minoru tries to think of what Takuma would do, before realizing that Takuma is not around and that he must deal with it himself, as a hero would. Minoru's strong spirit causes Falcomon to evolve into Valdurmon. | |
| Shibuya Aoi & Labramon | Any time from Part 9 onward | All routes except Wrathful | Anubimon |
While she is lost and crying in the foggy woods, Aoi is attacked by an especially Kenzoku who beats both herself and Labramon up. Aoi refuses to run away, as doing so would endanger the rest of the group, and she refuses to lose anyone ever again. She tells Labramon that she does not want brute power, as Labramon initially assumes, but unwavering justice. Her refusal to give in and her desire to wield power with both humility and wisdom causes Labramon to evolve into Anubimon. | |
| Kimishima Saki & Floramon | Any time from Part 9 onward | All routes except Wrathful | Ceresmon Medium |
While Takuma is bringing Saki back after she experiences a severe coughing fit, the two are attacked by a Holy Angemon. Floramon offers to buy them time so they could run away, but is unable to stop it. Saki refuses to run away as she was sick of doing so, be it from enemies, from her sickness or from herself. She curses her sick body, thinking that she could fight alongside Floramon if she was healthy. However, Floramon wants not the power to fight, but the power to heal Saki, and Saki realizes that what she wants is the power to heal herself and others, to go forward. This desire causes Floramon to evolve into Ceresmon Medium. | |
| Shinonome Kaito & Dracumon | Any time from Part 9 onward | All routes except Harmony | Beelzebumon |
Kaito and Dracumon attempt to protect a Palmon from a Mega Seadramon, but are incapable of beating it without a plan. Kaito refuses Palmon's request to leave him behind, as Miu cares about him and he does not want her to suffer again. Kaito wishes for power to protect Miu and what she cared about, and to crush his enemies; Dracumon asks him to believe in him and wish as hard as he could, and said wish causes Dracumon to evolve into Beelzebumon. | |
| Shinonome Miu & Shakomon | Any time from Part 9 onward | All routes except Harmony | Marin Angemon |
Miu acts as a decoy for a particularly powerful Blue Meramon to prevent it from attacking the others, including some Baby Digimon that they rescued earlier, but Shakomon is unable to defeat it. With her wish to be the one that protects everyone else instead of being the one being protected in mind, she asks Shakomon to give her even more of her power. Her unwavering desire to protect others causes Shakomon to evolve into Marin Angemon. | |
| Tominaga Ryo & Kunemon | Any time from Part 10 onward | Truth | Bancho Stingmon |
As Ryo and Kunemon talk about Ryo's wish to save the world for Kunemon's sake, they're attacked by a Delumon. While Ryo encouraged Kunemon to keep fighting, Kunemon wanted Ryo to run away, but he refused to leave him behind. In anger, Ryo admits how much Kunemon means to him, and swears to make their enemies pay for hurting both Kunemon and many others, as well as to protect Kunemon's world. As Kunemon started glowing in a red aura, Ryo realized how their hearts were becoming one, and Kunemon evolved into Bancho Stingmon. | |
| Kayama Shuuji & Lopmon | Any time from Part 10 onward | Truth | Cherubimon (Virtue) |
Takuma found Shuuji and Lopmon fighting a Gigadramon in the woods. Shuuji told Takuma to go back and get the rest, as they wouldn't be able to beat it alone. Seeing how they had no other way to win, Shuuji decided he'd take the Gigadramon down with him, and asked Lopmon to help him in the path he chose for himself, one fitting for his role as the leader, even if he knew it was selfish and self-righteous. His righteousness then allowed Lopmon to evolve into Cherubimon (Virtue). | |
| Minase Miyuki & Renamon | Part 10 | All routes except Truth | Kyubimon | After separating Aoi (in the Wrathful route)/Kaito (in the Harmony route)/both (in the Moral route) from Takuma and the others in order to turn the latter into sacrifices for the Master, Renamon evolves on their own into Kyubimon. | |
| Minase Miyuki & Renamon | Part 10 | All routes except Truth | Taomon | Renamon evolves on their own into Taomon, once again in order to turn Takuma and the rest into sacrifices for the Master. | |
| Truth | Renamon's rage at failing to kill Akiharu, who they viewed as a traitor to Miyuki, and their wish for power no one could match, causes them to evolve on their own into Taomon. | ||||
| Minase Miyuki & Renamon | Part 10 | All routes except Truth | Sakuyamon | After Renamon is beaten by Takuma and the others, the Master reappears, possessing Minase Miyuki. Realizing he had no intention of letting Miyuki go, Renamon cries out to Miyuki's heart, temporarily bringing her back. Angry at the Master for treating her like a belonging of his or a toy, Renamon transforms everyone's feelings into power and Warp Evolves into Sakuyamon. Renamon never actually evolves to Sakuyamon on screen in Truth, the player simply has access to it due to having unlocked it in an earlier route. | |
| Professor & Garurumon | Part 11 | Moral | Metal Garurumon | Garurumon (as Were Garurumon) collapses from his wounds while fighting the remnants of Piemon's gang, led by Pinochimon, and later realizes that his wounds are preventing him from mowing as he wishes. The Professor confesses to him how much it pained him to have left the world without him, and how he would understands being hated for it, but refuses to do so again because Were Garurumon had listened to him back at the altar. This makes Were Garurumon finally accept that the Professor was indeed Minase Akiharu, his partner, and he not only learns that Akiharu had not left him behind willingly, but remembers that their bond made him stronger: something Pinochimon, who does not trust humans, could never understand. Their rekindled bond causes Were Garurumon to evolve into Metal Garurumon, but his wounds and tiredness caused him to devolve into Gabumon after the battle. | |
| Truth | After the first trial from Qinglongmon, Garurumon was too tired to keep fighting alone for his final trial. While the Professor wanted to stop him, Garurumon asked him to believe in him so they could save Miyuki. Said trust allowed Garurumon to evolve into Metal Garurumon. Since he used too much power in the fight, he devolved to Gabumon afterwards. | ||||
| Shibuya Aoi & Labramon | Part 11 | Wrathful | Plutomon (Dark Evolution) |
When both she and Labramon were mortally wounded by Piemon, Aoi's desperate wish to live and her trauma after Saki's death materializes in a black light that emanates from their hands touching each other. Labramon's energy flows into Aoi, and they both Dark Evolve together into Plutomon. As Plutomon, Aoi desires for everything to become one with her so for the sake of peace and harmony. | |
| Momotsuka Takuma & Agumon Minase Akiharu & Garurumon |
Part 11 | Moral | Omegamon | After Akiharu and Renamon fail to break Miyuki free from the Master (with whom they were fused together as Miyuki (Kenzoku)) and Renamon dies protecting Akiharu, Saki, Aoi and Miu want to run away, while Minoru and Kaito want to stay and fight, reckless as it may be. Takuma, meanwhile, is unable to decide until Agumon tells him to rely on him, and that he will make sure that Takuma has nothing to worry about or fear. Takuma realizes this meant Agumon thought they could save Miyuki and the world, and Agumon wants to make those wishes come true. Gabumon tells Akiharu likewise. Their resolves restored, Takuma swears to save Miyuki and the world, while Akiharu acknowledges that they have no choice but to do it. Takuma's intense emotions cause Agumon to feel a heat inside himself, and Akiharu's resolve invokes an unfamiliar mix of many feelings within Gabumon. Knowing their current forms are unable to take those emotions and that they must become one, Agumon and Gabumon fuse together into Omegamon, whose strength restores everyone's resolve. | |
Digimon Story: Time Stranger[edit]
Evolution works similarly to previous Digimon Story games, though with changes and improvements. Evolution and devolution can now be done almost anywhere outside of battle as long as the Digivice menu is available. Unlike in Cyber Sleuth and Hacker's Memory, the option to Evolve is not available in the DigiFarm.
As with previous games, evolving and devolving may increase the Digimon's Potential (the replacement for Ability in Cyber Sleuth and Hacker's Memory) but it also will now keep 10% of the Digimon's stats, allowing later evolutions to be stronger. This can be done as many times as the Digimon's current Bond percentage, so up to a maximum of 100 times if maxed out.
Evolutions are now further limited by requiring the player to reach certain Agent Ranks. To reach a certain Agent rank, one must spend Anomaly Points (AP) on Agent skills, which are rewarded by progressing the story or in sidequests. The game gives just about enough AP for the player to reach Agent Rank 10 in a single run, meaning that if the player did not clear enough sidequests, they will be stuck with Adult or Perfect-level Digimon even by the end of the game.
The following Agent Ranks unlock new Generations of Digimon for evolution:
- Rank 3 unlocks Adults, as well as Armor and Hybrid Digimon. This can be done after clearing "Shinjuku Rhapsody" at its earliest.
- Rank 5 unlocks Perfects (and Lucemon). This can be done after clearing "Incoming Conflict" at its earliest.
- Rank 7 unlocks Ultimates (and Lucemon: Falldown Mode). This can be done after clearing "Throne of the Underworld" at its earliest.
- Rank 8 unlocks Super Ultimates (and Parallelmon, if the requisite DLC has been purchased). The player must at least clear several sidequests unlocked during "The Final Battle Over the Natural Order" to reach here.
- Rank 9 unlocks Aegiomon and all of its evolutions save for Chronomon: Destroy Mode. The player must at least clear several sidequests unlocked during "The Final Battle Over the Natural Order" to reach here. They are not likely to obtain Jupitermon here, however.
- Rank 10 unlocks Chronomon: Holy Mode and Chronomon: Destroy Mode. The player must clear the game and clear all sidequests to reach here. The final sidequest unlocks after clearing the game and rewards the last 150 Anomaly Points.
There are four Agent skills for each personality that reduce the stats required to evolve a Digimon if its personality matches the base personality Digimon it evolves to. If all four Agent Skills are unlocked, the stats required to evolve are divided by 4.71.
Furthermore, evolution is now possible in-battle through three new mechanics:
- Some Digimon can perform Mode Changes by performing specific attacks. Mode Change evolves a Digimon into another of the same level before performing said attack. The Mode Change remains until the battle is over or another Mode Change-inducing attack is performed.
- The Digimon that can trigger this behavior include: Agnimon, Wolfmon, Ranamon (and their Beast Spirit forms), Ceresmon, Duftmon and Magna Garurumon. Unlike the others who can freely shift between forms in-battle, Magna Garurumon's transformation is one-way and cannot be reversed until the end of the battle.
- Digimon that can Jogress outside of battle can also do so in-battle by selecting the special attack of their Jogressed form, which they'll get access to if both members of the Jogress are in-battle. Unlike Mode Change, Jogress only lasts for that one attack and takes both of the Digimon's turns.
- Uniquely, after obtaining the Crimson Dragon Data Fragment, Misono Inori's Aegiomon can use the "Evolution" command in-battle (which replaces the Change option the other player-controlled Digimon get) to switch between his various forms. These actions are not recorded in Aegiomon's Evolution history and do not yield blue stats. This doesn't take a turn and has no cost.
During the final fight in the game against Chronomon, he'll use Chrono Devolution to devolve all of the player's party to the Baby I or Baby II Generation (depending on species). Afterwards, Aegiomon (in any of his forms) will make them evolve one Generation in each of his turns with Aegiomon no Inori. These actions are not tied to the affected Digimon's evolution history; instead, a fixed evolution line is used for each Digimon. For example, a Chronomon: Destroy Mode that was in the active party in this phase will always devolve into Punimon and evolve into Elecmon, Aegiomon, Aegiochusmon: Dark then finally into Chronomon: Destroy Mode, even if the player evolved said Digimon using Butenmon rather than Aegiochusmon: Dark.
Aegiomon[edit]
Misono Inori's Partner Digimon, Aegiomon, evolves several times during the course of the game:
- Aegiomon went completely insane after losing Inori in one undisclosed point/timeline, where he evolved into Jupitermon: Wrath Mode to destroy the Giant Slayer, uncaring of the sheer destruction it would unleash to the world. The clash between two gods of time caused the Shinjuku Inferno. He also evolves into Jupitermon: Wrath Mode in the corrected version of the event in "The Cycle of Time", but the destruction was contained by Grace Novamon, Jogress Evolved from Apollomon and Dianamon. However, the damage from the fight separated Jupitermon: Wrath Mode into Yuki Dan/Yuki Kanan and Aegiomon once more.
- During the final battle of the chapter "Resonating Thoughts", Coo (an Elecmon at the time) is hurt by Cyclomon's Hyper Heat. Misono Inori tried to protect him, and her wish to gain the strength to do so caused Coo to evolve into Aegiomon. As pointed out by the Handler later on, this is the first time a human has been seen influencing a Digimon's evolution. This event is recorded in Aegiomon's evolution history and gives him cumulative (blue) stats.
- After being thrown into a dimensional portal by Junomon's rage in "War!", Aegiomon's determination to stay at Inori's side and protect her no matter what causes him to evolve once more into Aegiochusmon. This event is recorded in Aegiomon's evolution history and gives him cumulative (blue) stats.
- After trying to stop the berserk Treasure at the end of "The Defense of Nishi-Shinjuku", Aegiochusmon devolves into Aegiomon, though he can evolve in-battle (detailed above) or stay in Aegiochusmon form if equipped with the Crimson Dragon Data Fragment.
- After saving Neptunemon and Venusmon's lives in "A Promise to a Scarf", their newfound bonds with Aegiomon caused a fraction of the restricted power of the Sacred Vein to be released, evolving Aegiomon into Aegiochusmon: Blue. As with the previous Aegiochusmon form, Aegiomon is capable of evolving into Aegiochusmon: Blue in-battle or start in that form if equipped with the Blue Steel Data Fragment.
- After saving Bacchusmon's life in "The Titans' Grudge", the Sacred Vein once more bestows a new form upon Aegiomon, Aegiochusmon: Green, as well as the item to access it, the Emerald Arbor Data Fragment.
- After Inori was sealed off in a space-time distortion in "Where Did the Ribbon Go?", Aegiomon Dark Evolved into Aegiochusmon: Dark and went across timelines trying to save her, leaving a shadow clone of himself everywhere he went to. His actions caused further disruptions to the space-time continuum and mandated Homeostasis' intervention.
- After the Agent, having learned they were created from an Aegiomon shadow, convinces Aegiomon to let time finally move forward, even if it means their disappearance, in "The Cycle of Time", they fuse into Jupitermon. They fuse again to finish Chronomon, but then Aegiomon undoes the fusion so the Agent can watch over Inori while he becomes the Keeper of Time. He later evolves into Jupitermon on his own to form the Olympos XII.
- After the party was whisked into the Akashic Records alongside numerous others, Inori's pleas for Aegiomon to save her generated the final Data Fragment, the Holy Light Data Fragment. It allows him to evolve into Aegiochusmon: Holy. From this point on, his Personality shifts from Friendly to Tolerant, and his personality skill changes to Healing Wisdom (remaining so even on subsequent playthroughs).
NPC Evolutions[edit]
Out of Aegiomon, many other Digimon characters evolve during the course of the story.
- Yggdrasill's Omegamon can freely split back into Agumon and Gabumon and return to its original form, the smaller data size allowing them to freely operate in both the Real World and Iliad. They do this in the side mission "Between the Worlds" to fight an Orochimon, in the side mission "A Missing Friend" to fight an Anomalocarimon and in the side mission "Alpha and Omega" to face Alphamon.
- Starting from the side mission "From Pegasmon to the World", Pegasmon asks the Agent for Digimentals to help other Digimon in Central Town to Armor Evolve:
- Titamon appears as Titamon + Skull Baluchimon in "The Defense of Nishi-Shinjuku". After losing his first health bar in his boss battle, Skull Baluchimon is deleted, and Titamon evolves into Berserk Titamon using the Treasure. Titamon and Skull Baluchimon are reborn as Tunomon and Dorimon at some point during the timeskip. They temporarily recover their Titamon + Skull Baluchimon form for the "Hey!! Brat!! You've come!!" round of the "Greatest Omega Carnival" side mission, only to be unable to hold it and return to their Baby II forms after taking too much damage during the fight.
- Several Digimon evolved during the eight-year timeskip:
- Shiroki Asuna's Black Tailmon evolved into Beel Starmon.
- Central Town's Monodramon evolved into Strikedramon.
- Blimpmon evolved into Master Blimpmon.
- Abyss Area's Mega Seadramon evolved into Metal Seadramon.
- Shellmon evolved into Venusmon
- Hangyomon evolved into Neptunemon.
- The Kamemon from the side mission "The Color the Water Speaks Of" evolved into Jumbo Gamemon.
- Gear Forest's Hawkmon and Floramon evolved into Griffomon and Lotusmon, respectively.
- The Palmon who assisted the party in Gear Forest 8 years ago evolved into Rosemon.
- Also from Gear Forest, the Muchomon from the "Secret of the Hidden Honey Base" side mission evolved into Peckmon.
- Bearmon (Older Brother) was abducted by the Titans, who promised that if he would accept his body to be modified, his younger brother will be spared. He then evolved into Callismon.
- The Monodramon and Guilmon that trained under Monochromon in Central Town evolved into Cyberdramon and Megalo Growmon, respectively, and moved to the High-Rise Colosseum.
- Central Town's Solarmon evolved into Clockmon.
- Angered at her plan being foiled, Ranamon slide evolved into Calamaramon to personally kill Neptunemon and Venusmon in "A Promise on a Scarf".
- During the fight against Tyrant Kabuterimon in "The Titans' Grudge", Bacchusmon Mode Changes to his Crapulence Mode. He returns to his normal mode after the battle.
- Bearmon (Younger Brother) evolved into Grappu Leomon during the timeskip. He then evolved further into Marsmon while confronting his elder brother Callismon.
- After defeating Callismon, High-Rise Colosseum's XV-mon and Stingmon Jogress Evolve into Paildramon and move to Rebellion Village.
- Thanks to touching the truth of the "Twentiest", Zubaeagermon evolves to Duramon in the side mission "The Easy Road Is Best". It then devolves into Zubaeagermon after finding itself underwhelmed by normalcy, but by pursuing to stand out instead, it rediscovers the meaning of the "Twentiest" and evolves into Grademon instead.
- After most of Iliad was destroyed or compromised by the Titans, Chronomon used a Chronolixir to turn the Titans' supposed leader Plutomon into Zombie Plutomon.
- Coronamon and Lunamon respectively evolved into an Apollomon and Dianamon and became the area guardians of the Cosmic Area. When being ordered by Jupitermon to control the damage caused by the Shinjuku Inferno, they Jogress Evolved into Grace Novamon to seal him and the Giant Slayer in a subspace. After Jupitermon defeated the Giant Slayer, they were separated by the space-time distortions caused by said fight.
- Junomon went completely insane from the grief of losing Aegiomon and was possessed by Chronomon after he discarded Plutomon. While being possessed, she was perpetually in her Hysteric Mode. She reverts back to her normal form after being defeated in her boss battle in "The Mad Oracle".
- As Aegiomon awakens his Jupitermon form, Sirenmon evolved into Ceresmon in "The Cycle of Time". This also counts as a Death Evolution as Sirenmon died during the failed Gear Forest invasion before evolving into Sirenmon.
- After defeating Enbarrmon in the side mission "Showdown with the Immortal Steed", the Royal Knight Craniummon was allowed to ride it, evolving into Craniummon + Enbarrmon. They separate again after reaching the Central Town rendezvous point. They rejoin to face Chronomon in "The Final Battle over the Natural Order".
- Yggdrasill's Magnamon devolved into a V-mon because of Iliad's barrier. After eating super-sweet ice cream with the Agent in the human world in the side mission "V-mon's Growth", it evolved back into its Magnamon form.
- Duftmon can freely switch between its normal and Leopard Modes. After the Agent defeats it in its Leopard Mode in the side mission "A Facilitator's Woes", it switches to its normal mode.
- Both the real and copy Beelzebumon of the Seven Great Demon Lords Mode Changed into Beelzebumon: Blast Mode to face the Agent and Minervamon. The real one did it in the side mission "Minervamon's Decision" and the copy one did it in "The Final Battle over the Natural Order".
- The Demon copy had two Chimairamon and two Mugendramon copies Jogress into two Millenniumon before their fight in "The Final Battle over the Natural Order".
- The Belphemon copy evolved into Belphemon: Rage Mode after being defeated as Belphemon: Sleep Mode in "The Final Battle over the Natural Order".
- Alphamon evolved into Alphamon: Ouryuken off-screen to fight Chronomon in "The Final Battle over the Natural Order".
- During the final part of the fight against Chronomon in "The Final Battle over the Natural Order", Minervamon evolved into Mervamon.
