Note: Refers to the last of three great periods of Egyptian civilization from about 1540 to 1075 BCE comprising the Eighteenth Dynasty through the Twentieth Dynasty. The period is characterized by a flowering of the arts including the introduction of colossal statues, a new interest in painting, a high degree of craftsmanship in both royal and private sculpture, and elegant decorative and luxury arts. Notable architectural works include chapels, rock-cut tombs, and monumental stone temples for worship of the gods attesting to the rising power of the priesthood. A brief revolutionary episode especially in representational art occurred during the reign of Akhenaten in the Amarna period when many existing conventions were reversed and more freedom of expression was allowed.

| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar de laatste van drie grote tijdperken in de Egyptische beschaving, van circa 1540 tot 1075 v. Chr. Het tijdperk loopt van de Achttiende tot de Twintigste Dynastie. De periode kenmerkt zich door een bloeiende kunst, onder andere zichtbaar in de introductie van kolossale standbeelden, hernieuwde belangstelling voor de schilderkunst, een hoge mate van vakmanschap in zowel de koninklijke als de particuliere beeldhouwkunst, en sierlijke decoratieve en luxueuze kunstuitingen. De belangrijkste architectuur omvatte onder andere kapellen, in de rotsen uitgehakte tomben en monumentale stenen tempels voor het aanbidden van de goden, die een bevestiging vormen van de groeiende macht van het priesterdom. Een korte revolutionaire periode, met name in de representatieve kunst, deed zich voor tijdens de heerschappij van Achnaton in Amarna, toen vele bestaande kloosters werden omgevormd en meer vrijheid van meningsuiting was toegestaan. |
