Hello, I’m Gary Dalkin. Whatever your writing needs, given my 30-plus years as a published writer and editor, it’s likely I can help. This page serves as a gateway to my site, from where you can find out about my services, what my clients think about me, and what else I have done besides editing books. I also feature upcoming appearances and events here. Explore the site and see what I can do for you, then get in touch. I’ll look forward to hearing from you.
A quick note about AI. I don’t use it. At all. All my editing and writing, and the creation of this website, is done the old fashioned way, using my brain, real human intelligence, plus empathy and insight, drawing on decades of experience. There’s zero AI here or in any of my work. I somehow managed without it for 60 years, and I will continue to do so. Writers hire me for what I can do, for real human perception, not the plagiarised ‘insights’ of digital code that doesn’t even know what it feels like to eat a sandwich, much less fall in love, or anything else about what it means to be human. For regular updates, and various interesting or amusing posts about writing, writers and publishing, join my To The Last Word group on Facebook. Or contact me with an enquiry.

Discover what my clients have said about my work for them. Below is one example, from Mark deMeza, author of the international bestseller, The Thirteenth Child.

The Thirteenth Child being my debut novel, I was somewhat apprehensive about my first interaction with an editor. I needn’t have worried. Gary performed an exceptional structural edit for me. He was able to highlight a number of minor improvements as well as some significant changes to the balance and content of my manuscript. His feedback was always concise, professional, and delivered in line with our agreed timeframes. There is no doubt that Gary returned my manuscript in a much better condition than he received it. I have no hesitation in recommending Gary’s skills and services to other writers.

Books I Have Worked OnBelow are the eight of the most recently published, or due to be published, titles I have worked on. Follow this link for a more extensive cover gallery of some of the many books I have edited.

At the Bournemouth Writing Festival I have been a speaker every year at the Bournemouth Writing Festival to date. Here is a gallery of photos from my talk Organising Chaos: Turn a Messy Draft into a Publishable Book, with Sophie Beal, the director of Cadence Publishing last year. The talk turned out to be the bestselling daytime event of the entire three day festival, and I am thrilled to say that Sophie and myself gave an updated version of the talk at this year’s festival on April 25 (a gallery of photos will follow soon, but meanwhile there are a few further down this page).
This year I also chaired two panels at the Writers’ Hive, helped run the festival bookshop, and joined my client Sacha Hughes for the launch of her debut novel, Love, Grief & More Sex Than Pinot, which Sacha hired me to edit after seeing Organised Chaos last year.
This is what Sacha had to say about using me as her editor:

‘I hired Gary to edit the first book in my ‘Soho Summers series’ after seeing him present at the Bournemouth Writing Festival in April 2025. His session, Organising Chaos: Turn a Messy Draft into a Publishable Book, co-hosted with Sophie Beal, Director of Cadence Publishing, was fantastic. I loved their friendly, down-to-earth approach and deep knowledge of what it takes to get a book publishable.‘Gary’s warm and approachable style made it easy to speak with him directly after the session, and from that moment, I knew he was the editor I wanted to work with. One week and a phone call later, it was a done deal!‘He’s since completed the first full edit of my book, and his feedback has been invaluable, particularly in terms of structure and plot twists. His editorial report was thorough, insightful, and honest, packed with brilliant suggestions. He clearly identified what was working, what needed improving or cutting altogether, and why, all while holding me to my highest standard and encouraging me to push further.‘Having made the necessary changes, I’ve now hired Gary for a second edit. I've full confidence in Gary and his work, to help me make my debut novel the strongest it can be while preserving my voice as a writer.‘Wherever you are on your writing journey, if you are looking for an insightful, constructive, and genuinely supportive editor, I recommend Gary wholeheartedly.*Sacha Hughes, Love, Grief, and More Sex Than Pinot

An Author’s Perspective - Passion vs Profit ~ Inside a Small Press

In March I was at the Royal Bath Hotel in Bournemouth with the director of Cadence Publishing, Sophie Beal, talking about the differences between publishing with a major company and a small press. This was one of a monthly series of talks and workshops - An Author’s Perspective - given by publishing professionals for bestselling psychological thriller writer Alex Stone’s Author Events. Our talk was Passion vs Profit ~ Inside a Small Press.

Appearing at the Romance Writing Festival Bournemouth in October

With Sophie Beal, director of Cadence Publishing, I will be giving a version of our talk Organising Chaos specially tailored to the Romance genre at the second Romance Writing Festival Bournemouth on 3 October. This is the festival’s description:
