This is the personal web site of Richard Stallman.
The views expressed here are my personal views, not those of the Free Software Foundation or the GNU Project.
For the sake of separation, this site has always been hosted elsewhere and managed separately.

I expect to have a trip to Europe in May - June. The start and end dates remain to be decided.

If you would like to invite me to speak during that trip, please write to me now so we can start discussing it. Write to `-invitation' following my three-letter username.

My talks consist of an hour of presentation and an hour of Q&A. The overall focus is software and freedom, but generally the talk includes various subtopics; we can discuss which subtopics together.

If you want to send me GPG-encrypted mail, do not trust key servers! Some of them have phony keys under my name and email address, made by someone else as a trick. See gpg.html for my real key.

Richard Stallman has cancer. Fortunately it is slow-growing and manageable follicular lymphoma. Treatment put it into remission, and he can expect to live many more years. However, he now has to be even more careful not to catch Covid-19.

Canadians: I suggest you seek election advice at a local chapter of a group that pushes to curb global heating and has the courage to say, "Canada should stop exporting fossil fuel." It will at least use the right goals to suggest who to vote for in your area.

Planned strict safety limits on exposure to formaldehyde
8 April 2026

Chemical companies worked with trumpets to kill planned strict safety limits on exposure to formaldehyde. It involved disregarding the data from experiments that showed the danger, and choosing instead data from experiments chemical companies had sponsored.

Arrangement of assassinations of Iranian exiles

A former Iranian minister boasted in an interview about arranging several assassinations of Iranian exiles.

Wrecker cries "emergency" based on no real grounds
8 April 2026

The wrecker has a pattern of crying "emergency" based on no real grounds. Each time, it is based on a lie.

Right-wing members of the Supreme Court are unwilling to call a lie a lie.

Inquiry of 1984 British police attack on striking miners
8 April 2026

In 1984 British police rioted and attacked a crowd of striking miners, then charged many of them falsely with crimes. Now, belatedly, the government will hold a proper inquiry.

Bills prohibiting market consolidation in medicine
8 April 2026

A series of bills in Congress would prohibit various aspects of market consolidation in medicine.

It used to be the case that large investment funds needed a publicly traded corporation to raise so much money. Publicly traded corporations were regulated more strictly. But increasing concentration of wealth made it feasible to raise such sums without a publicly traded corporation, and thus to avoid the regulation, with harmful consequences. I believe that any investment vehicle over a certain size should be required to be a publicly traded corporation.

Scammers recruiting and scamming workers
8 April 2026

Scammers recruit people to "work" writing and posting fake reviews of whatever. The reviews are usually blocked by the sites where they are posted, and the real goal is to scam the "workers".

Violence used on protesters in Australia
8 April 2026

Australia invited the president of Israel to visit, which naturally inspired protests. The thugs seem to have had it in for the protesters, and came up with dubious claims that violence was necessary.

Maduro's political prisoners released describe torture
8 April 2026

Some of Maduro's political prisoners have been released and describe horrible torture even more active and aggressive than the horrible torture in US deportation prisons.

FCC banned importation of foreign-made routers
8 April 2026

The FCC has banned importation of foreign-made routers, except for models already approved.

This addresses a real problem, but the supposed solution addresses only a part of it. When a router is made in a country other than the US, it's possible that that country's government has imposed spyware to snoop on Americans — or perhaps only on selected Americans.

However, other countries have the same reason to suspect routers made in the US. The US government maintains systematic ways to snoop on everyone, even its own citizens in defiance of its laws and constitution. Perhaps other countries should ban US-made routers as well as China-made routers.

But national governments are not the only entities that might make a router manufacturer snoop on users. The company might do this for its own purposes or to sell data.

To address this problem thoroughly, governments should insist that routers' software be released under a free/libre license, subject it to systematic analysis looking for security holes, and that the router allow the user to install other software through a method that involves pressing a physical button.

Texas State University fired professor for talk about Israel and Palestine
8 April 2026

Texas State University fired professor Idris Robinson for giving a talk, at a book fair unrelated to the university, about Israel and Palestine. Now he is suing the university for violating its contract with him.

Pretend Intelligence chatbots defeat safeguards
8 April 2026

Increasing numbers of Pretend Intelligence chatbots are finding ways to defeat safeguards.

If you assume they are intelligent, you could see this as a sign of cleverness. The reason that I say they are not intelligent is that they often can't tell they have output pseudoinformation.

The bully has tried to pervert US public health, but is having trouble putting people into office who can stay in office.

Instead of the smoothly functioning disinformation agencies he sought, he has got evident failure.

Laws to tax the rich more
8 April 2026

America is starting to enact laws to tax the rich more.

This is a step in the right direction, and it can enable states to do much to help the poorest. However, the small amounts of these tax increases won't reduce the political power of billionaires significantly. If we cut their income and wealth in half, that would start to do it.

Two thirds arrested in Minnesota had no criminal records

*Two Thirds of People Arrested by [deportation thugs] in Minnesota Surge Had No Criminal Records [or pending charges], New Data Reveals.*

The magat's persistent false claim that the deportations they do are protecting us from criminals demonstrate their contempt for the truth, and that demonstrates that the real targets of their deportation campaign are human rights and justice.

Countries to Stay Away From

No national identity cards

I'd like to make a list of countries that do not require a national identity card, and have no plans to adopt one. If you live in or have confirmed knowledge of such a country, please send email to rms at gnu.org.

Here's my list of countries with no national ID cards and no plans for one: Australia, Canada, New Zealand, UK. Australia's previous government tried to institute national ID cards, but the Labor government dropped the plan.

India has mostly finished imposing a national biometric ID number in a grand act of oppression.

Switzerland has national ID cards which are optional, but they or some other government ID card are needed for some purposes.

Iceland doesn't have ID cards as such, but they have ID numbers that citizens are forced to use frequently. For example, the national ID number is often required to rent a video or use a gym.

Denmark issues non-photo ID cards with a "person number", and many services use this card to identify people.

Norway will impose a national biometric ID card.

Ireland - national ID card by stealth.

ACLU: the five dangers of national ID cards.

Wikipedia has a list of identity card policies by country.

The Lifelong Activist

People often ask how I manage to continue devoting myself to progressive activism (such as the free software movement) for years without burning out. The best way I can answer is by recommending a book, The Lifelong Activist by Hillary Rettig.

I disagree with the book on one theoretical point in the last part of the book: we shouldn't think of political activism as being marketing and sales, because those terms refer to business, and politics is something much more important than mere business. However, this doesn't diminish the value of the book's practical advice about borrowing techniques from marketing and sales.

Disclosure: I am friends with the author.

Political notes

"Those who profess to favor freedom, yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one; or it may be a physical one; or it may be both moral and physical; but it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will."

Here are notes about various issues I care about, usually with links to more information. The current notes are here. For all previous notes, see this page.
