The Patron Saint of Superheroes

Chris Gavaler is a professor of English at W&L University, comics editor of Shenandoah magazine, and series editor of Bloomsbury Comics Studies. He has published eight books of comics-related scholarship: On the Origin of Superheroes (Iowa 2015), Superhero Comics (Bloomsbury 2017), Superhero Thought Experiments (with Nathaniel Goldberg, Iowa 2019), Revising Fiction, Fact, and Faith (with Nathaniel Goldberg, Routledge 2020), Creating Comics (with Leigh Ann Beavers, Bloomsbury 2021), The Comics Form (Bloomsbury 2022), Revising Reality (with Nathaniel Goldberg, Bloomsbury 2024), and The Color of Paper: Representing Race in the Comics Medium (Ohio State 2026). His comics appear in INKS, Studies in Comics, Sequentials, Ilanot Review, and other journals.
