Slow Sunday Stitching

Welcome to the weekly hand stitching party!

Don't stand too close to me at the party though because I've been sick with the annual winter virus with inflammation in the nose, throat and lungs. A new game we've played since 2020 is called "guess what I'm sick with"! Who knows if it's covid, influenza, a head cold with a sinus infection or perhaps pneumonia? It feels similar to when I had covid, even though I had the vaccine in November, and the covid test was negative, so it's anyone's guess. Perhaps it doesn't really matter since I haven't left the house since Tuesday, so I haven't spread my nasty germs to others.

I have spent the time in bed hand stitching the bindings on two baby quilts. They have kept me  company while resting, drinking tea, watching flosstube, and taking tylenol.

Each baby quilt has a different design which I will show in a post next week (once the parents have received them). And I quilted them differently. One quilt has a free motion quilting design and one has a straight line grid.  But they both have the same backing fabric which is one of my favourite prints of all time - Tula Pink's Fairy Dust.

Here is a photo of my preferred tools for stitching a binding. I like the Clover black gold applique needles. The dark colour makes them easy to find in my needle book, they are sharp and narrow for easy piercing of the fabric. They are a bit challenging to thread because the eye is small, but not small enough to deter me from using these needles. And of course my favourite Aurifil thread 50 wt, a pair of snips, and a sturdy thimble.

I hope you all are well and able to get some stitches into your projects this week. Please link up your blog post below and share your slow stitching with us.

Slow Sunday Stitching

It's Sunday! And you know what that means - it's time for rest, relaxation, recuperation, and renewal. Relaxation doesn't happen by reading about it, thinking about it, or hoping for it. It only happens by doing it! And what better way to relax than to do some hand stitching?!?

I really need some stitching time today since all my free time lately has been spent in the world of car shopping, which has been stressful. So today I plan to relax with needle in hand and will try not to think about the car situation until Monday.

A show that I found on youtube that helped me with distraction this week is called "Game of Wool". Have you heard of it? I searched around on Youtube and was able to find all of the episodes. You may be able to watch the first couple of hours here. It was very inspiring and made me think that maybe I could knit a sweater or a hat?!? It inspired me to start a knitting project so I bought this yarn from Galt House of Yarn. I have never knit a hat before, but today I fancy myself to be a knitter extraordinare!!  🤣🤣🤣

And in cross stitch world, I made some progress  this week on the Festive Mandala from Vani at Thread the Needle Designs. It is very relaxing and I can get lost in the stitching, so it is a perfect choice for today.

I like this photo I took when I was stitching on my mandala while watching Vani's flosstube video. You can see the photo of her finished project in the background. She always reminds me that contentment and relaxation is found in the process of stitching, not the end result. She stitches enormous projects with thousands of stitches and although she likes to set goals to achieve, it's just about moving forward and stitching what makes you happy!

I hope you are doing that today - stitching whatever brings you joy and helps you to relax. Pick up your needle and threads/yarn and put in some stitches. And then link up your blog post to share what you are relaxing with today.

Slow Sunday Stitching

Happy New Year and welcome to the first hand stitching party of 2026! Did you get any stitching supplies or patterns that you have had a chance to play with over the holidays?

I have been busy working on some older projects and starting a few new ones. You can see what I worked on for the 12 x 12 New Year Eve stitching (12 projects in 12 hours) in the video I posted today.

Here is the project I started in December called "A Pretty Song" which is a collaboration by Evertote, Roxy Floss Co. and Modern Folk Embroidery. I think that this is the most intricate detailed item I have ever stitched and I really love all the details. There is still so much more to stitch, but I will keep at it because there are more birds to be stitched and  gorgeous blue wings to attach to the 2 main birds. So fun!

I enjoyed a stitching day with some friends on January 1st and there were 2 in our group that brought hand stitching to work on. Pat worked on hand quilting a baby quilt. I hope you can see the original quilting design that included hearts and straight lines around an embroidery block (of kittens playing in a washtub).

Friend Marg started a hand embroidery block but didn't make much progress and had to leave early because her husband has been so ill. Every stitch counts and every visit with friends is helpful!

I was piecing a mystery quilt from Scrapdash that was very fun and great to use up scraps. But I was often found playing with the dog Molly instead, because she makes herself impossible to resist! I kept trying to tell her that I was very busy sewing, but she didn't care about that!

So that's what I have been up to with stitching this week. What have you been working on? Link up your blog post below and share your 2026 projects with us!

Slow Sunday Stitching

Welcome to Slow Sunday Stitching - a celebration of all kinds of hand stitching! 2025 was a great year for slow stitching - 52 weeks have passed in which we could enjoy our own hand stitching, and be inspired by the projects of our friends. Thank you to each of you who have linked up your blog posts on Sundays and shared your stitching with us.

I am ending the year by trying to finish my version of the Modern Folk Embroidery's Christmas Duck. It did get many stitches in it, especially while waiting to get the oil changed in my car. The "speedy" part of the oil change was anything but fast, so it gave me "found time" to make a lot of progress and I really enjoyed the rest! I'm hoping this will be my last finish for 2025.

This is the Anna Gutova Stitch Along that she provided on her instagram in December. I stitched it on Roxy 16 count fabric using Rosy 'gilded' and 'smitten' flosses. I think I'm going to finish it in a hoop frame. It's such a pretty Christmas design and will be fun to display in December 2026!

Another December accomplishment for me was filming a daily Youtube video from Dec. 1 to Dec. 24 showing some advent projects and some of favourite quilts. It was quite a time commitment, but it worked out okay in the end. I'll be making a video of my exciting New Year's Eve hand stitching plans and posting it early on the 31st if you're looking for something to watch!

Are you ending 2025 with some hand stitching? We love to know what you're working on so tell us in the comments and/or link up your blog post below.

Slow Sunday Stitching

Welcome to the weekly hand stitching party!

Today is the winter solstice in my little corner of the world. This occasion marks the longest night of the year and the shortest day.

What better way to pass the time than to do some Slow Sunday Stitching?!?

The Christmas Countdown project called "A Pretty Song" has kept me very busy, and this is where it is as of friday's stitching. It's a very intricate stitch on 25 count evenweave. RIght now it has about 10 birds fully or partially stitched in, and I love it!

I have been stitching a few other projects this month and you can catch up on that by watching any of the daily videos I have made for "Flossmas" in the month of December.

At this time of year everyone asks "are you ready for Christmas"? My answer is "not at all"! But things get done, food gets bought and cooked, presents get purchased and wrapped, and some of my hand made gifts might actually get finished in time!

How about you? Are you "ready"? Link up your blog post below and share your last weekend before Christmas stitching update.

Slow Sunday Stitching

Welcome to the weekly hand stitching party!

If you are feeling like you have no time for relaxation this weekend, I understand completely! And yet, it's so important to make time to slow down, to breathe deeply, and to reset with some relaxing hand stitching.

I have been enjoying the Countdown to Christmas advent project called "A Pretty Song", This is where my project is as of yesterday. I adore the birds and really want to keep up with the pattern additions we get each day, but it has been a challenge!

In fact my hand stitching has become a little stressful this week as I try to keep up with a couple of advent stitching projects and finish some things for gifts. I have also been taping a short "flossmas"  video every day and it has been a challenge sometimes to get everything done. My goals far exceed my capacity! This is a long time pattern for me, so I have only myself to blame for this stress. It happens every December and in the next 11 days I will struggle to finish all the things I want to make.

Are you the same? Do you put pressure on yourself to finish too many things in December- baking, shopping, decorating, wrapping, cooking,  visiting, stitching, etc??

Link up your blog post below and share how things are going with your mid December projects!

Slow Sunday Stitching

Welcome to Slow Stitching Sunday where we make time to slow down our lives, to breathe deeply, to pick up a needle and thread, and take some slow stitches.

This weekend I have been attending the Jingle Ball which is an online cross stitch event. My friend Debby and I rented a little Air B'n B in the middle of nowhere which is a renovated 150 year old church with so much character!
We invited our friend Barb to join us for a little holiday, and she is a long time hand stitcher.

We have had long stitching sessions and started some new projects. This one is a free stitchalong that I started. The pattern is from Anna Gutova at Artmishka Cross Stitch. My friends think it is a radish. It is not! I think it will become a Christmas ornament on some evergreen boughs.

I have been posting a video every day in December on Kathy's Quilts and Stitching showing my 5 advent calendar projects that I am opening every day before Christmas. One of the projects is the Evertote, Roxy Floss Co, and Modern Folk Embroidery holiday countdown collaboration called "A Pretty Song". This photo shows the border and I am making slow progress. You can hear more details on my flosstube if you are interested.

I hope you will link up your blog post below so we can see what you are hand stitching this week!
