SQT Secret Santa Swap...

This year I played along in the Secret Santa Swap in the on-line Small Quilt Talk group.  I hadn't joined in on this particular swap before and when I was given the name of who I was sending to I had a moment, just a moment, of intimidation...a long-time member with a fantastic sense of nonsense, I mean humour - in her likes/dislikes she stated no puce or zebra stripes! Only Jane! I decided to do stitcheries in quilt-as-you-go hexies for hanging decorations so the rummage for designs began.  Now she has a band of bears that run to mischief when she isn't looking but the bear line drawings I found weren't "quite right". I have a couple of patterns with lovely bears I could have embroidered but they weren't at all Christmassy and I'd by now decided I wanted Christmassy...then a light bulb moment....rummage, rummage, rummage, found it! Michelle Ridgeway's Christmas pattern with drawings of Aussie birds/animals...I love Michelle's drawings...there wasn't a koala (not a bear) so I chose two of my favourites and a kangaroo because, well, going to America so I figured a kangaroo would be recognised...the wombat and blue wren were a bit maybe, maybe not, in the recognition stakes but I love wombats and blue wrens...
I added a couple of other bits - you'll notice everything was "flat" to make it easier for posting...
and gave the envelope to the care of the Post Office Elves and crossed my fingers and toes they'd deliver it in time for the Christmas Eve group opening event...they did...well done on that one Postie Elves getting it there on time.

Then...I waited for the Postie Elves to deliver into my post office box...and waited...and waited...and then we finished work for the year and it still hadn't arrived and I had to go back to the house where my furniture lives - 220kms due east so hardly a quick trip to check if there was mail...I had to wait until I swapped towns again and came back west after Boxing Day...I was very excited to find a red parcel locker key in my post office box!!!!  I took one look at the return address and knew I was a very lucky swapper indeed...it had come a loooonnngggg way...all the way from...Belgium!

And how sweet is this...Christa waited for me to be able to open before she opened what she received...and boy was I spoilt...
Ooohh...multiple surprises!...
Worth the wait is an understatement...a lovely wee tree runner, bear claw variation mug rug, cute pinwheel hanging cushion, christmas stickers, a lovely L'Occtaine travel sized set and Real Belgian Chocolates! handmade by Christa's chocolatier friends (and they are delicious!).  I sat in wonder at each item for a looonnnnggg time.  I love it all.

Flourish Block....

In June last year (2018) Sharon Burgess of Lilabelle Lane Creations did a workshop for Stawell Craft Shop. It was a fun day and the project was a block from Sharon's Flourish Quilt that she had made into a cushion.  Paper pieced of course being Sharon but interesting with different shapes.  I have finally finished the paper pieced block - it isn't appliqued onto a background nor does it have any purpose in life - yet - but it is done as such.
Going to live in the box of random blocks and stitcheries for now as I don't want to make the cushion but I'm sure it will come into its own at some point in the future.

Stawell Quilters Fat Quarter Swap 2019 - Part 2...

Of course I had a surprise back to me from the fabric I'd put in for the Fat Quarte Swap.

Typically I'd completely forgotten what fabric I'd put in - makes it a real surprise when I open the parcel on all levels, the item and reminding me what my fabric was!

It turns out I'd put in a Tilda fabric and I was gifted with a little travel stitching roll...

A lovely use of my fabric and matched beautifully by my secret maker, love the red spotty binding - who also included important touches in a reel of thread, a small pair of scissors and a good chocolate supply!! ha ha ha.

I'm sure I'll get use out of my gift.

Stawell Quilters Christmas Fat Quarter Swap 2019 (Part 1)...

Stawell Quilters held the Christmas Fat Quarter Swap*(explanation at end of post) again this year.  The fabric in the paper bag I was given was this...
Mmmm, that is interesting and not at all what I'd have expected from the person I was making for. Coincidentally, just that week, I was in the local habby and she had a bundle of fat quarters that I really liked but couldn't justify and that bundle immediately sprung to mind as appropriate colours for this piece of fabric...what a shame I was forced to go and buy that bundle - he he he.  And then when I was in the ACT I found the perfect perle cotton at Crafty Frog in Kambah - the shopping gods were smiling on me with this fabric which I had initially thought would be impossible to match.

Instead of a fat quarter the recipient had put in a half metre of her fabric so that was plenty to play with. I had the idea to make a bag that could be used for transporting knitting but couldn't find a pattern to fit the picture in my head so used a pattern for an all-purpose bag I have made before and found useful myself. I used a mix of the "True Friends Tote Bag" from Natalie Bird's book Red Home with a stitchery pattern from Anni Downs' book The Simple Life, then when being totally flummoxed about what fabric to use for handles I found resin handles that I felt matched perfectly. I had just enough of her fabric left to make the handle hinges.  I hand quilted with big stitches in the variegated perle thread I'd bought home from the ACT.

I think I may have missed the mark with the person particularly liking it but hopefully she'll get some use out of it.

*A fat quarter is put in a paper bag with your name on it and handed in to the Group.  The paper bags are put into a basket and randomly distributed to the participants.  You make something using the fat quarter in the paper bag you are given for the person whose fabric it is.  The fabric the person puts in is the only guide the rest is up to the maker.

Fabric Frolic 2008 Sampler Quilt...It's a Top!...

Yes, you are reading the Title correctly 2008 (not 2018)...back in 2008 Mistea and I played in the Outer East Fabric Frolic in Melbourne and collected the block patterns at each participating shop for the event sampler quilt.  I decided at the outset I wanted my quilt to be blue and white and bought blue/white fabrics along the way.  There were some other fabrics added to the pile over time and the blocks were made here and there and kept together in a basket with fabrics for some day.  Well, Melbourne Cup Day this year that some day came around...that morning I went into the sewing room and spied the basket and that was it...putting the quilt top together became the event for the day. I didn't get it quite done on Cup Day but it went from a box of bits to this...
And then, a week or so later...to this...
A completed top...and an empty basket with fabric released back into the wild of the stash...

One day it may even become a sandwiched quilt, but...no rush.

Dressmaker Exhibition...

There was a reason why I was tripping up and down the Hume Highway recently...to go here!...

Or more technically correct the ACT (Canberra) to visit with friends and go to...The National Film and Sound Archive ...to see...
an exhibition of the costumes from the film...Loved it!...the detail and workmanship in each piece - stunning...there was also a short documentary film "Behind the Seams" to watch which was so interesting and informative.  We went around the exhibition, watched the film and then...back around the exhibition for another go...My friend E & I spent four hours at the NFSA and went around the exhibition three times! - having another final look before we left for the day. Did I say I loved it!!...I've seen the movie more than once and to see the costumes and the amazing detail not apparent on screen was well worth the drive north.

OK so the four hours wasn't just in The Dressmaker, we also had the experience of a Virtual Reality Experience as part of the Carriberrie exhibition/event which was amazing and we were lucky to get to see it as it was nearing the end of time it was being presented...it happened to be the start of NAIDOC Week which was appropriate but really was just coincidental...neither of us had ever experienced a Virtual Reality presentation before and we both raved about it afterwards...so much fun...it was like really being in the different communities sitting on the grass or the sand or a log watching the performers tell their stories through dance and song.  We also sat through a number of newsreels showing in the cinema including a tourism "advertisement" for Melbourne leading up the 1956 Olympic Games which was presented as a short film about a family preparing for daughter's wedding showcasing various places around Melbourne as each family member took care of things like travelling to Melbourne by plane (I think on TAA!!!)...Mum going into Town (the City) to buy a hat...Grandpa bringing flowers in from his place in the country (somewhere like Ferntree Gully!)...it was a bit of fun.

A few pictures...taking photos wasn't restricted in the exhibition and I took full advantage of being able to bring home a record...

It was just so well curated and presented.  Each item had a description not only of where it sat in the story but who wore it and details of the fabrics and construction methods used...

Each outfit beautifully presented, not behind glass or a wall so the details and fabrics could be fully appreciated...

Scenes from the movie formed backdrops to the mannequins...
Glass cases showcased props and one set out some of the tools and techniques used by the costume designer and her team in creating the costumes and props.

It was just so fabulous...

Stitching Day at Stawell...

Fun day yesterday stitching with friends at this year's workshop held by Stawell Craft Shop...again we had the lovely Sharon from Lilabelle Lane come play for the day.  This year's project was Sharon's Tis The Season Christmas decorations pattern.  A rummage through the stash found some Christmassy pieces to take along and we received a kit with the stiffened felt, ribbons, bells and pattern.

Quick and easy everyone finished one, two or even three decorations...

One in the bauble shape finished before lunch (yes, you read that correctly, I not only finished something in a class I finished it before lunch!)...
Two done by the end of the day (and I left slightly early!)...not the best picture as the sun was happily streaming in the window and casting shadows...might need to add a little bling but haven't had a chance to see what is hiding in the sewing room to add yet...
My first one top right hanging out with J's and N's...not a bad day's "work"...

Mandy & Cheryl did a fabulous job as usual putting on the day - good venue, yummy homemade food, great tutor, lovely play friends...looking forward to next year's day already...

Labrador Tote Bag...

On the weekend...well quite a few weekends ago because I completely forgot I'd started this post - oopsie!...I think I made it up either over Easter or on Anzac Day...

A panel I've had for so long I can't even remember where it came from or when...using two of the four labrador pictures for each side of the bag and one side border for the handle.  Lined (with homespun) but no batting or interfacing so totally unstructured.  Has been in use quite a few times.
I've only used half so have 2 pictures and one border left for another day...

Gardening Quilt...

Once upon a time long long ago a trip was made to The Patchwork Angel in Queensland (back when Lynette Anderson owned the shop)...stitcheries were purchased...said stitcheries were worked...fabrics were purchased to go with...and they all lived happily in a paper bag for many many many years...until one day in 2018 a clammer arose and the stitcheries and the fabrics got together and made lots of noise until the sew-er took notice and let them out for some air...the stitcheries put their case forward that they wanted to be surrounded by the fabrics and made all the same size...and so they were...
Garden Shop - Bronwyn Hayes for The Patchwork Angel
Garden Angel - Lynette Anderson for The Patchwork Angel
Gardeners Bounty - Lynette Anderson for The Patchwork Angel
The Allotment - Lynette Anderson for The Patchwork Angel
and they hung on the "design sheet" and decorated the sewing room happily for a few months until the sew-er ripped them down and painted the door they were hanging over! The blocks were unhappy lying on the cutting table so they rose up and demanded to be made as one...and so they were...
...floral fabrics purchased from goodness knows where and goodness knows when but it was a long time ago...the silvery contrast was added from the cupboard stash at the time of construction...

Not unhappy with it at all...a couple of the stitcheries have ceramic buttons but I've taken them off so they don't get broken and will re-attach after it is quilted (no rush!)...

Tea Cup quilt...

A project that has been on the go so long I think pre-dates blogging (as I can't find it on this blog and I'm too lazy to search the old Wordpress one)...my Tea Cups Quilt...a Crabapple Hill Studio design I did as a block of the month years ago through a shop in Sunbury.  I loved the stitcheries (and still do).  It has hung about for years as after I quilted and bound it I then decided to do more quilting on the border (leaves)...which never really eventuated, it just became a "one day" job with the quilt hanging over the hand quilting floor frame for years...well "one day" came on Friday when I decided that if I really wanted that extra quilting it would be done by now (and the few leaves I'd stitched were pretty craptastic) so the quick unpick came out to play and 10 minutes later (told you there wasn't much done) the few leaves were pruned and I called it done!
All it needs now is a wash on the weekend, happy to have it finished...

Sampling with Pink & Green - Part IV

For no particular reason I suddenly decided I wanted to put all the Pink & Green Sampler Blocks together - having absolutely no plan of what it would become...slowly over the course of last week it came together and is now a finished top...
I'm quite happy with how it turned out and it's a good enough size. The fever has now abated and its happy playing with its friends in the quilt top pretty sheet collection for now.

Australia Day Holiday Trekking...Wimmera Outdoor Art...

Well this post has languished for only, um, nearly three months, I'd forgotten all about it...
*******************************************************************************
Monday was the gazetted public holiday for Australia Day and my last day of two weeks of annual leave.  Mistea is staying as she house-sat and minded Jindi while I went to Summer School.  As it wasn't forecast to be as stupidly hot as it has been and Mistea hadn't seen any of the (Wimmera) silo art trail I came up with the idea to go for an afternoon drive and check out some outdoor art.  First stop was Stawell, OK so only 1/2 hour up the road and one I often see but I wanted to include a picture because I think it is so well done...
Another building mural at Rupanyup...
Painted by street artist Georgia Goodie in 2017 as tribute to the local CFA. The building is the ex-Shire office now used by the community for business and community activities.  I missed the sign for the silos at Rupanyup, so next time for that one.

Next were the silos at Sheep Hills...
The silos were built in 1938 and painted by Melbourne artist Adnate in late 2016. The portraits are of Wergaia Elder - Uncle Ron Marks, Wotjobaluk Elder - Aunty Regina Hood and children Savannah Marks and Curtly MacDonald.

Last stop was Brim...I'd visited the Brim site in 2016 but always worth another viewing...

If only I'd thought of this for Sunday we could have set off earlier in the day and also visited the Stick Shed at Murtoa - another time for that one as well. (*Edit, the stick shed is now open more often than the 1st Sunday of the month.)

A pleasant afternoon before going back to work...

Summer School 2019...

Summer School has come and gone for another year...five days of fun and friendship...stitching, talking and learning...Wednesday and Thursday were spent in Karen Cunningham's workshop starting her quilt "Alice"...
Friday was sit and sew and I worked on a component of a very very old quilt project of Karen's quilt "Bumble Bee", which out of context of the whole makes no sense, so, no pics of that progress...

This year Karen had a guest tutor in Judy Newman...she had let us know last year that she was planning to have Judy come along...I didn't want to make Judy's quilt but I was keen to have the experience of taking her class...her quilt was a two block (repeated) design and I was happy to just make a block and leave it at that - and to my great relief Judy didn't take exception and was happy for me to do just that...she is a lovely lovely lady and a great tutor, I came away with learning of her techniques and tips and that was my aim so mission accomplished...the block was finished too!...
The quilt is County Clare and the other block has a shamrock applique but I've decided I don't want to make that one.
