Partition

Hi, wondering if anyone can help a self teaching lad out....I want to partition my windows 2000 box and install Redhat 7.2 on it...I know how to get to the disk management section...but how do I make a new partition..I clicked on the icons and read the help but it is very hard to read for some reason...And also if anyone knows how after I install can I select what operating system I want to run when it is turned on....Would 1 gig be enough room for linux...

ok, first of all, the easy question:

Yes, it will let you choose which operating system you would like to run. It's a program called LILO (Linux Loader). This will allow you to choose between your windows partition and your linux partition each time you boot up.

It's hard to say whether 1gig will be enough. It all depends on what you want to install, and what you don't want to install. For example, last night I installed Mandrake, and I included everything except the server packages and the documentation. It was 1.4 gb. I have installed Mandrake before with using under 500mb. 1 gig should be enough, 2 gigs if you have the space will be better, cuz you have to make a partition for your swap first.

Ok, as for the partition, and the other members will correct me if I'm wrong, but you should be able to resize your windows partition from Disk Druid, then create the 2 partitions you need for linux (Linux Swap and Linux Native). I'm not sure though, I've only installed Red Hat once before.

Hope this helps

Nick

Yes I have a spare box that had 98 on it...so I formatted it and wanted to just totally put linux on that..but it kept freezing up...had all the specs to put linux on it but it would never finish the install.....I have 7 gigs to spare..so I will probally go to 2gig then....I am familiar with LILO and all the stuff you suggested Nick but I guess I never got to far to see what else there is to install...thanks for the reply...

yeah, 2 gigs would probably be better, even if you don't use much for the installation, you may want to install other programs later on.

Glad I could help

Nick

Yah I will give it another twirl this weekend....I copied the disks, with no instructions or what have you...but this will help..time to motor
