An unnamed bidder has paid £1,350 at auction for a rare Broons annual signed by the artist.
The 1959 book, which was sold in St Andrews, was given as a birthday present by Dudley D.Watkins, who wrote a personal message in the front sleeve.
There was also an original drawing of Oor Wullie, another of the famous cartoon characters penned by Watkins.
The auctioneer said the book had previously been sold at a car boot sale for just a few pence.
Work signed by Watkins is extremely rare and it is commanding ever-increasing prices.
There were four bids for the book, published by Dundee-based D C Thomson.
Auctioneer Sandra Urie said before the sale: "I understand that the book was purchased some years ago at a car boot sale.
"It was part of a job lot which was bought for 5p."
